After that night, Kaelen actually went through with it. Announced Isabella as the new Luna.

The day of the ceremony, my father walked into the Blackwood estate leaning hard on a

cane. Limping.

My mother came with a veil over half her face.

The night I died, Kaelen had ordered my father fifty lashes.

He’d been one of Silverclaw’s strongest warriors once. Tougher than ordinary men.

But he was old.

The fifty lashes didn’t kill him. They broke one of his legs.

As for my mother-she was slapped for as long as my father was whipped.

The face she’d taken such care of for years was ruined. She wouldn’t let anyone see her

anymore.

That wasn’t all. Kaelen had thrown them out of the Silverclaw estate. Stripped them of their

family name. Sent them out to live like rogues.

When Isabella saw them like this, she didn’t look heartbroken. She frowned. Disgusted.

“Didn’t I tell you not to come?”

“I’m about to be the Luna of the Blackwood Pack. People from the other packs see you like

this, what do you think it’ll look like? You think they won’t laugh at me?”

My mother stared at her. Couldn’t believe it.

“Isabella. You’re our daughter. It’s your day. Of course your father and I came.”

“Don’t you want us to see you become Luna?”

She meant it.

Isabella didn’t care.

She clicked her tongue. Annoyed.

My father couldn’t hold it in.

“Isabella. Back when Evelyn became Luna, she treated your mother and me with respect. We

loved you for years. How can you act like this?”

He didn’t finish. She cut him off.

“Enough.”

“You drag Evelyn out on the biggest day of my life-are you trying to spite me?”

“You want to come, then come.”

“But you’re not seated in the hall. You’ll stand somewhere far away with your rogue faces,

take a look, and leave. Don’t stay in the estate and embarrass me.”

They stared at her. Could not believe the words coming out of her mouth.

My father’s face went purple.

“Isabella. Don’t forget. You’re a Frost. Silverclaw blood runs in your veins.”

“Luna or no Luna, you’re still our daughter. How did you turn into this? Right now-you’re not

even half of what Evelyn was.”

Isabella laughed.

“I’m not even half of Evelyn?”

“Did Mother and Father forget who drove her to it?”

“What is this? She’s dead, so now you remember she was a good one?”

It went through them like a knife.

They couldn’t speak.

She had no patience for them anyway.

For years she’d been playing pitiful and dutiful in front of them, just to take their love off me.

After she got into the Blackwood estate, she’d played it again in front of Kaelen.

Now I was dead. No rival left.

She didn’t need to pretend anymore.

“The Alpha has arrived.”

The smile snapped back onto her face the second she heard it.

She started to go meet him at the door-then stopped cold when she saw the pack healers

behind him.

“Alpha-I’m much better. There’s no need for the healers to check me again.”

“The ceremony’s about to start. Let’s go to the hall.”

She thought he was worried about her health.

Kaelen’s mouth twitched.

“You’re being crowned Luna. You can’t go up there with that face.”

She thought he meant her makeup.

She hadn’t even called for a mirror when the guards stepped forward and pinned her down.

They poured a bowl of dark medicine into her mouth.

The pack healers carried their cases into the inner room.

A few minutes later, the screaming started.

Kaelen stood in the doorway.

Nothing on his face.
