After I Blew Out My Sister’s Candle, My Parents Stopped Loving Me Chapter 06

The first drawing showed six people: Grandpa Charles, Grandma Eleanor, Dad, Mom, Chloe, and me.

All six of us were holding hands under a smiling sun.

At the top, in crooked little letters, I had written:

[My Favorite Family in the Whole World.]

The second drawing was of my mother with a big round belly, and a tiny little me inside it.

Next to it, I had written:

[Mom said I was naughty in her tummy and made her suffer.]

[I’m sorry, Mom. When I grow up, I’ll be really good to you.]

The moment she read that, the floodgates opened.

Drops splashed onto the paper smearing the wax and the ink.

The third drawing showed my parents holding baby me while my grandparents stood beside us smiling.

Next to it, I had written:

[Mom and Dad said I was a big baby and the family’s treasure.]

[I’m so happy. When I grow up and make money, I’ll give Grandpa and Grandma and Mom and Dad lots and

lots of money too.]

My father didn’t say a word but tears kept running down his face.

The fourth drawing showed several dairy cows gathered around a tiny little me.

Next to it, I had written:

[Mom said they kept cows so I could always have the freshest milk.]

[When I grow up, I’ll make Mom the yummiest food so she never gets hungry.]

My mother kept wiping at her eyes, but no matter how hard she tried, they would not stop.

Chloe slowly came closer too. She picked up one of the drawings with a trembling hand.

The fifth drawing showed Chloe holding my hand while we played together at WonderPier.

In my childish handwriting, I had written:

[Chloe is the best. She always plays with me.]

[Chloe wants to ride roller coasters, but I’m too scared.]

[Chloe rode the carousel with me so many times. I’m going to grow up fast, and when I do, I’ll ride roller coasters and the pirate ship with Chloe!]

[Whatever Chloe wants to ride, I’ll go with her.]

Chloe bit down on her lip and looked toward me, her eyes turning red.

My mother’s eyes were already puffy and raw, but she kept turning the papers until she reached the last one.

On that page, I had drawn a birthday cake with candles on it, and five people standing beside it.

Next to it, I had written:

[Today is Chloe’s birthday. I’m going to sing to her and watch her blow out the candles and make a wish!]

[Chloe will never guess it, but my wish last year was that all her wishes this year would come true. Hehe.]

Thinking about it now, both Chloe’s wish and mine had come true.

From now on, when Chloe went to the amusement park for her birthday, it would only be Mom and Dad with

her.

There would never be a me again.

It was strange.

Chloe got the wish she wanted.

So why did I feel so sad?

My mother clutched the drawings to her chest and broke down completely. “Ellie, I was wrong. I was so

wrong…”

“I never should’ve said those things to you. You didn’t mean to blow out the candles. I know you didn’t mean

to…”

“You just sneezed. I’m sorry, Ellie…”

She gasped for air between sobs, until she ended up collapsed on the floor with her forehead pressed against the cold ground.

Outside, the siren finally grew loud.

The ambulance had arrived at last.

But I already knew it was too late.
