For the next two days I didn’t go into the office, and Grayson didn’t come home.
And it wasn’t just that he stayed away.
I also saw that he’d taken Chloe on a little countryside getaway.
They ran hand in hand through the fields, faces inches apart in the sunset, lips puckered like they were about to kiss.
Chloe was updating her Instagram practically once an hour.
A coworker commented under one post, asking Chloe straight out if she was dating Grayson.
“Oh, stop it. Don’t go spreading rumors. The owner doesn’t allow office romances.”
It was the kind of non-answer that only confirmed there was something going on between her and Grayson.
What really twisted the knife was that Grayson had liked every single one of Chloe’s posts.
To keep anyone from suspecting us, he’d gone as far as muting my posts entirely, never mind ever liking one.
There was even a time I couldn’t help myself and posted a couple photo with his head cropped out.
Five minutes after it went up, Grayson called me, furious.
“Didn’t I tell you? You are not allowed to make our relationship public.”
His shout left me frozen.
But something in his icy tone made me delete the post right then.
And when Grayson got home, he still gave me the silent treatment anyway.
It wasn’t until half a month later, after I swore up and down never to post a couple photo of us again, that he finally let it go.
Done torturing myself, I took a page from Grayson’s book and muted Chloe’s posts for good.
At the same time, I called the landlord and gave notice on the apartment Grayson and I had rented.
I also called in a cleaning crew and had every photo of us and every couple’s keepsake from those years thrown straight into the dumpster downstairs.
