Only ten minutes remained before the wedding began.

Ryan searched the ballroom and every room backstage, but there was still no sign of the Whitfields.

His instincts told him that Thomas, Helen, and Sophie weren’t coming.

The moment the thought formed, his already-unsteady heart began pounding so hard it felt ready to break

through his ribs.

Restlessness and dread followed.

He pulled out his phone and switched repeatedly between his contacts and WhatsApp, unable to settle on

what to do.

A few minutes later, one of the groomsmen told him it was time to take his place.

Ryan finally made a decision. As he headed toward the ceremony, he called Thomas.

A minute later, Thomas answered in his booming voice.

“Ryan, aren’t you about to get married? Why are you calling me now?”

Ryan heard the endless crash of waves in the background, and his heart sank. He forced a faint smile into

his voice.

“I am. That’s actually why I’m calling. Aren’t you and Helen coming to the ceremony?”

“I’m sorry, Ryan. Our family is traveling, so we can’t make it. We wish you and Isabelle a happy marriage.”

They were words of congratulations, but they left a strange bitterness in Ryan’s chest.

He checked the time and said something even he couldn’t quite understand.

“That’s okay. You’re at the beach, right? If you start driving now, you might still make it.”

A long silence followed.

When Thomas spoke again, he sounded stunned.

“Ryan, we’re in Barcelona. Didn’t your parents tell you…”

Barcelona.

Ryan went completely still.

Spain?

Why was the Whitfield family in Spain?

And what had his parents been supposed to tell him?

Questions rose one after another until they crowded everything else from his mind.

He forgot the wedding entirely and turned back toward the dressing rooms. He caught up with his parents

and grabbed them, his voice urgent in a way they had never heard before.

“Dad, Mom, Thomas says they’re in Spain. Didn’t you tell them I’m getting married today?”

Richard and Grace exchanged confused looks.

“The Whitfields moved to Spain a month ago. You really didn’t know? We assumed Sophie told

They had moved to Spain.

He had never imagined they would leave New York for good.

“The ceremony is about to start. Stop staring into space. Nothing is more important than getting married right now. You can deal with this afterward.”

Ryan’s face had gone several shades paler. He heard none of it.

He lifted the phone again and realized Thomas was still calling his name on the other end. Hope flared

inside him.

“Thomas, is Sophie there? Can you put her on? I need to talk to her.”

After a burst of background noise, Sophie’s ice-cold voice came through the phone.

“Say what you need to say. If there’s nothing, I’m hanging up.”

At the same moment, the officiant’s amplified voice carried through the ballroom doors.

“And now, please welcome the groom!”

Ryan ignored it.

Sophie’s voice was the only sound left in his world.

“It’s my wedding today.”

“Congratulations. Is that all?”

Her cold indifference sparked his anger, and his voice rose sharply.

“I said it’s my wedding today. Did you hear me?”

The officiant called for him again. His parents urged him to move.

Ryan remained rooted to the spot.

Then he heard Sophie give a quiet, mocking laugh.

“What does that have to do with me? Ryan Blackwood, from now on, you live your life and I’ll live mine. Don’t

contact me again.”
