After 999 Nights, He Said We Were Never Together Chapter 08

When the doctor confirmed that the chandelier hadn’t broken any bones and the injury was only superficial, Sophie finally relaxed.

Once her hand had been bandaged, she went home.

Their departure date drew closer, and luggage of every size filled the Whitfield living room.

After resting for two days, Sophie told several close friends that she was moving to Spain permanently.

They arranged a farewell dinner for her.

The mood remained heavy throughout the evening. No one wanted to see her go, and they made her promise

to stay in touch after she moved abroad.

It was nearly midnight by the time the gathering ended.

After seeing everyone off, Sophie paid the bill and returned to the private room for her purse.

On her way out, she passed the room next door and heard several familiar voices.

“Ryan, what’s it like finally getting the girl you could never forget?”

The door stood slightly open. Sophie heard the smile in Ryan’s voice as clearly as if she were inside.

“I’d die happy right now.”

Laughter erupted around the table, followed by another teasing question.

“Then what about that childhood best friend of yours?”

More than ten seconds passed before Ryan answered, still sounding careless.

“Her? She’s good in bed.”

“A woman who comes whenever you call, sleeps with you, and never asks for commitment? The rest of us

should be jealous.”

More laughter followed. Ryan merely raised a brow and said nothing.

“Now that you’re engaged to Isabelle, what are you going to do with your childhood best friend?”

“End it cleanly. Isabelle is the only woman in my heart. I don’t want anyone else.”

He sounded so certain that everyone began praising him for his devotion.

Outside the room, Sophie’s nails dug into her palms until her knuckles turned white.

She had believed her heart could no longer break over him.

But hearing those words with her own ears still left her bleeding inside.

More than twenty years together.

Years of endless phone calls, holding hands, kissing, and sharing a bed.

All of it reduced to one sentence.

She’s good in bed.

Sophie bit down hard on her lip until she forced the pain in her chest under control. Then she turned and

walked away on heavy legs.

Rain was falling outside. She stepped into it with her head lowered, only to find someone blocking her path.

Isabelle stood in front of her with four or five other women.

Sophie said nothing and reached for her phone to call a car, but Isabelle grabbed her arm.

“I knew there was something wrong between you two. Now I finally have proof. You really were shameless enough to keep throwing yourself into my boyfriend’s bed all these years.”

The malice in her voice drained the color from Sophie’s face.

Sophie tried to explain, but Isabelle gave her no chance.

“Maybe it didn’t matter before. But Ryan and I are engaged now, and you’re still coming here to find him. Do you enjoy being the woman no one can acknowledge?”

Sophie’s chest tightened. She drew a deep breath.

“I’m not the other woman, and I didn’t come here for Ryan tonight…”

Before she could finish, Isabelle signaled to the women beside her.

“Drag her back inside. Then find a few homeless men.”

The others immediately seized Sophie and shoved her upstairs.

“What are you doing?”

Alarm surged through her. She fought with all her strength, but there were too many of them. They locked her

inside the private room at the far end of the hall.

A short time later, one of the women returned with a homeless man.

Isabelle clapped her hands and stepped aside with a cold smile.

“This woman doesn’t care what anyone does to her. You can have your way with her, so make sure you

satisfy her.”

She ordered the others to shut the door.

Inside the cramped room, the ragged man stared at Sophie with gleaming eyes and lunged.

She scratched and struck at him, fighting desperately, but it did no good.

He was far stronger. Within moments, he tore open her dress and exposed large stretches of skin.

He pressed his mouth against her in a frantic frenzy. The stench of sweat and dirty water filled the room.

Rage and terror exploded through Sophie.

She grabbed the ashtray from the table and smashed it against the man’s head without thinking.

He collapsed to the floor with a heavy thud.

Having narrowly escaped, Sophie grabbed her phone and ran.

At the stairwell, she collided with Isabelle, who hadn’t yet left.

Isabelle’s expression changed the moment she saw Sophie had escaped. She seized her wrist.

“How did you get out?”

She was about to drag Sophie back when she spotted someone turning the corner.

In an instant, Isabelle’s expression transformed.

She threw herself backward and tumbled down the stairs.

Ryan emerged just in time to see her fall. Horror filled his eyes as he rushed forward and gathered her into

his arms.

When he saw the bruises covering her body, he turned on Sophie in fury.

“Sophie Whitfield! Why did you push Isabelle?”
