After 999 Nights, He Said We Were Never Together Chapter 04

That night, Sophie opened a travel app and searched for a nonstop flight from New York to Madrid.

She had just completed the payment when Ryan arrived with Isabelle.

“Sophie, I came to tell you the good news. Isabelle agreed to date me. See how much I value you? You’re the first person I told.”

Sophie looked at their tightly clasped hands and nodded.

“Congratulations.”

Happiness shone in Isabelle’s eyes. She smiled shyly.

“Thank you. Helen told me you were badly hurt. Are you feeling any better? I made seafood bisque for you. You should have some.”

As she spoke, she urged Ryan to serve it.

Sophie watched him obediently do as Isabelle asked and went still for a moment before finding her voice.

“Thank you, but I can’t have the bisque.”

Ryan’s face hardened at once.

“Isabelle cooked this herself. I barely wanted to share it with you in the first place. She was worried about your injuries, so I reluctantly agreed to bring you some, and now you’re acting ungrateful.”

He poured a bowl as he spoke, shoved it into Sophie’s hands, and insisted she drink it immediately.

Sophie tried to explain, but he pinned down her wrist.

During the struggle, the bowl tipped.

Scalding soup splashed directly over her wounds.

“Ah!”

Cold sweat broke across her forehead. Her face twisted with pain and turned white as paper.

Isabelle jumped in alarm and reached for tissues, guilt written across her face.

Afraid she might burn herself, Ryan immediately pulled her behind him.

“Isabelle, this isn’t your fault. Sophie’s always been tough. It’s nothing serious, so don’t blame yourself.”

The tissue in Sophie’s hand shook several times. Her chest constricted.

A second later, Thomas pushed open the door. When he saw blood seeping through her bandages again, he immediately called for a nurse.

Helen’s heart ached for her daughter, but she still patiently packed away the bisque and explained to Isabelle,

“Sophie is allergic to seafood. She can’t eat this, but we appreciate the thought. Thank you.”

Ryan froze. Awkwardness crept across his face.

“Why didn’t you say something sooner?”

Sophie stared at the bandage stained red and felt bitterness spread through her.

He used to remember every food she couldn’t eat.

Whenever they went to a restaurant, he reminded the staff again and again. No seafood. No nuts. No cilantro.

But now Isabelle filled his entire heart and mind. Of course he no longer remembered details like those.

A person’s heart only had so much room.

It could hold only one person.

And Isabelle was the one Ryan loved.

After a long silence, Sophie finally answered with a strained smile.

“You never gave me a chance to speak.”

The hospital room fell silent.

Isabelle looked so guilty she was nearly in tears. Ryan couldn’t bear to see her upset, so he said nothing and left with her.

Because the wound became infected, Sophie remained in the hospital for another three days.

Their move to Spain drew closer, and everyone in the Whitfield household was busy packing.

Thomas and Helen couldn’t get away, so they prepared an expensive gift and asked Sophie to deliver it to the Blackwoods.

The moment she arrived, Richard and Grace took her hands and apologized repeatedly.

“Sophie, we’re so sorry. You and Ryan have shared more than twenty years together, yet when the accident happened, he protected only Isabelle and left you there. You were hurt so badly because of him. We feel terrible. We’ll make sure he apologizes to you.”

Sophie shook her head and reassured them gently.

“Miss Monroe is Ryan’s girlfriend. It was natural for him to protect her. I’m fine now, so please don’t worry.”

Only when they saw that she didn’t seem angry did Richard and Grace finally relax.

After a few minutes of conversation, Sophie explained why she had come. The Whitfields were preparing to move to Spain permanently.

The news caught the Blackwoods completely off guard.

“So suddenly?”

“The company has been restructuring. We’ve actually been preparing for the move for six months. It was only finalized recently. My parents wanted me to tell you in person.”

The thought of longtime friends leaving filled Richard and Grace with sadness.

“Will you ever come back?”

Sophie smiled. Her voice rang clearly through the quiet living room.

“Once we leave, we won’t be coming back.”

At that exact moment, Ryan opened the front door and stepped inside. He frowned toward them.

“Who isn’t coming back?”
