Down the far end of the hallway, Benjamin finally stepped out of the exam room.

He handed the stamped paperwork to Chloe, his tone soft.

“Don’t worry, your enrollment paperwork won’t fall behind.”

I held my silent, broken Sammy close, grief overwhelmed every ounce of my rage.

Chloe’s study plans were safe-but Sammy’s eyes had already sustained irreversible damage.

I pulled out my phone and typed a message to my attorney.

Inside the observation ward, Sammy lay in bed, his right eye newly wrapped in gauze.

I climbed into a vehicle with Sammy, bound for the premier ophthalmology rehabilitation hospital in the North Territory Pack.

As dawn began to break, Benjamin finished his last surgery and returned to the ward. He pushed the door open to find the room empty.

The bed linens were neatly folded. The nightstand sat bare.

Benjamin stood in the doorway, completely drained, like all the fight and resolve had been sucked right out of him.

“Where is everyone?”

The nurse spoke quietly from down the hall.

“Mrs. Smith transferred your son to another hospital in the early hours.”

Benjamin gripped the doorframe, knuckles white.

“Where exactly did they take him?”
