The Morgue

A sudden realization hits him, his voice tightening. “Did you… did you not let her out?”

The maid looks bewildered. “Let who out?”

He turns and sprints up the stairs, his boots pounding against the wood.

The moment he rips open the closet door, he turns to stone.

The torn silver cuffs, the discarded tie… and dried streaks of blood smeared against the closet walls.

Nothing else.

She left?

Grayson stares at the bloodstains, a cold sneer suddenly escaping his lips.

Maeve acts like she doesn’t care about leaving, but clearly, she’s furious.

Teaming up with her mother to put on a show.

“Great acting,” he mutters low. “Staging a suicide just to squeeze more out of the pack.”

He pulls out his phone and dials her number.

It goes straight to voicemail.

He turns to the maid. “Watch Leo. I’m going to see exactly what game they’re playing!”

The maid opens her mouth to speak, but swallows her words.

At the healing center’s morgue.

When the pack healers see Grayson, their faces are pale, eyes red from crying. They aren’t hostile, but the grief makes them bold.

“Alpha.” An older healer steps forward, her voice cracking. “Where is Luna

Maeve?”

Grayson frowns.

A dark, sickening feeling coils in his gut.

“Hasn’t she been here?”

“Here?” The healer lets out a broken sob. “If she had been here, Lyra wouldn’t

be dead!”

“Last night, Lyra stood on the edge of the cliff for over half an hour. We stalled her. We told her to at least say goodbye to Maeve and Leo. She hesitated.”

“We couldn’t reach her mind–link! We called her phone dozens of times, and

she didn’t answer a single one!”

Grayson stiffens, his fingers curling into tight fists.

Last night?

He had thrown her into the closet. Her phone… It was on the bedroom floor.

And her mind–link… Of course they couldn’t reach her. She had signed the Severance Pact hours before. He kicked her out of their mental connection.

“Lyra heard Luna Maeve was being banished. She thought she was a crippled burden dragging her down, so she jumped…”

“Why didn’t Luna Maeve come? How could she just abandon her?”

Grayson says nothing.

He wants to explain–she was locked in a closet, her phone was out of reach, she heard the call, she begged him, but he didn’t believe her…

But the words die in his throat.

Another doctor walks over, looking utterly exhausted. “Alpha, you need to handle Lyra’s rites. We can’t keep her here.”

“And when you see Luna Maeve, tell her Lyra’s last words were, ‘Don’t blame Maeve, I dragged her down.‘ She defended her until the end.”

Grayson stands rooted to the spot, his fingers trembling.

“The banishment… who told her?” His voice suddenly spikes. “I haven’t even performed the Rejection Ritual!”

The doctor frowns. “We don’t know. Luna Maeve hasn’t been here in two days. But Serena came by yesterday. Lyra started acting strange right after.”

Grayson’s pupils constrict violently.

Serena.

She was here.

No wonder it felt wrong.

Maeve always shielded Lyra from bad news.

She would never tell her about the banishment.

He stumbles back a step.

Suddenly, Maeve’s desperate screams from last night echo in his ears: “She took that silver blade for you and Leo!”

Three years ago.

He was holding Leo near the border. A rogue ambush. A wolfsbane bomb temporarily blinded him. A rogue lunged with a silver blade dipped in lethal poison.

Lyra threw herself in the way. The blade shattered her spine.

She survived, but lost her wolf and the ability to walk.

Back then, he had sworn: “I will take care of you forever.”

At first, he visited her.

But over time… he forgot.

He even stopped letting Leo visit, claiming the healing center smelled too much of death for a pup.
