A Gift for the Don: I Aborted His True Love’s Heirs Chapter 02

The voices in the study continued. Every word hit my chest like a bullet.

“Multiple bone marrow samples. That’ll keep Nina stable for years.” Damian’s voice practically dripped with satisfaction.

Luca’s tone turned sycophantic. “Genius move, Don. Use Nina’s eggs, your seed—make the kids, then plant ’em in Audrey. No loose ends.”

“Although… her vitals have been all over the place lately. Carrying that many is tearing her apart.”

“As long as she survives until delivery.” Damian’s laugh was cold. “Nina can’t wait for the next treatment cycle. I have to guarantee success the first time.”

My whole body shook. So that’s why six at once. To him, my life wasn’t even worth delaying Nina’s next round of treatment.

Luca let out a dark chuckle. “Donna Audrey’s completely in the dark. Months along and she still hasn’t picked up on a single thing. She actually thinks it’s normal—getting pregnant with a litter from one IVF cycle.”

“Hope she stays that clueless.” Damian’s voice was ice.

Luca dropped his voice to a conspiratorial whisper.

“Don, imagine the look on her face if she found out those ‘vitamins’ you’ve been giving her every night are laced with black-market fertility drugs.” He let out a low laugh.

“Her stomach’s so blown up it looks like she swallowed a boulder. She can’t take ten steps without gasping. At the last family dinner, people were talking. Said we bought ourselves a breeding machine.”

Damian laughed along with him. “She never belonged in the Falcone family in the first place. If it weren’t for Nina, I never would have agreed to this marriage. Bankruptcy? That’s exactly what her father deserves.”

I stumbled back two steps. Every drop of color drained from my face.

Did he truly despise me this much?

When morning sickness made me vomit until nothing but bile came up, I bit my pillow so I wouldn’t wake Damian sleeping beside me.

When my legs swelled until I couldn’t get out of bed, I dragged myself to the hospital alone.

That week I was hospitalized for internal bleeding, I refused painkillers because I was terrified the medication would harm the babies’ development.

I endured all that suffering willingly. Because I loved him.

And in their eyes? That was just “good constitution” and “she can take it.”

I still remember our wedding night. Damian traced my flat stomach and whispered, “I can’t wait to start a family with you.”

Back then, I thought he was imagining our future.

I never suspected he was orchestrating this betrayal.

“If she can’t keep food down, put her on IV nutrition. Don’t let it affect the babies’ development.” That became his most frequent command.

Every time the needle pierced my vein, cold fluid flooding into my body, concern flickered in his eyes.

But he wasn’t worried about me. He was worried about the children he’d created with Nina.

I closed my eyes. Wiped away tears. Reached for my phone.

“Mira. I’m ending the pregnancy. As soon as you can get me in.”

…

By the time I steadied myself against the wall and left the hallway, the study had fallen silent.

Only Damian and the steward, Aldo, remained in the great hall.

Damian was staring down at his phone.

I let my footsteps ring out deliberately. Damian snapped his phone shut immediately. A flicker of unease crossed his face.

“Audrey?” Damian raised an eyebrow. His gaze dropped to my hand clutching my phone. “Still awake?”

I looked at his counterfeit concern and swallowed the bile rising in my throat. “Just getting some water.”

“Aldo made you some soup. Drink a little before bed.” His voice carried that careful, rehearsed tenderness. “It’s good for the babies.”

Good for the babies.

I realized now just how much he disgusted me.

“I’m fine.” I shut him down cold and turned toward the stairs.

Damian suddenly grabbed my wrist. His warm palm slid over my swollen belly.

“Come with me tomorrow to see Nina. She heard about the pregnancy. She wants to see you.”
