I flew back, and my phone was off for two hours.

When I landed and powered it on, my phone exploded with notifications.

They were all from my former coworkers.

[OMG Jessica! You were Lucian’s secret girlfriend? All these years? You’re a legend for keeping that under

wraps!]

[Jessica, I’m sorry. If I ever did anything to wrong you before, I apologize.]

It all came crashing back.

Someone in the bathroom that day had filmed the whole thing with Victoria.

The video was now viral in the company chat.

Just as I finished piecing everything together, Lucian’s call came through.

“Jessica. Get on the company chat and post a denial. Now. Clarity that we were never in a relationship.”

Before he could finish speaking, Victoria’s crying voice sounded beside him.

“Mr. Vance, just let me resign. I really can’t take this humiliation anymore.”

The moment she finished speaking, Lucian hung up the phone.

I shook my head helplessly. If my phone were not tied to my bank account, I would have changed my number

immediately.

Before I could dwell on it any longer, my thoughts were interrupted.

Christopher Hayes was standing outside the airport, smiling softly as he looked at me.

I waved at him and ran over excitedly.

“Aren’t you cold? How long have you been waiting?”

Christopher studied me intently for several seconds.

“I’ve been here since five. Couldn’t sleep. Kept thinking you might… reconsider.”

My heart clenched. I took a deep breath and said, “Christopher, the second I asked you, any chance of regret

vanished.”

His eyes instantly reddened.

I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his waist, then took out my phone and snapped a photo of

us together.

“My coworkers found out about Lucian and me. He called and told me to lie about it.”

“I agreed. Since our relationship started in secrecy, I want it to end quietly as well.”

Christopher chuckled. “Why use a photo? Use our wedding invitation.”

He took my phone and sent a wedding invitation directly to the company group chat.

[Sorry, everyone. You seem to have misunderstood.]

[I do have a boyfriend, but it isn’t Mr. Vance. My boyfriend and I have been together for ten years. I resigned because we’re getting married.]

[This is our wedding invitation. We’ll be getting married in four days. If you’d like to attend, you’re welcome.]

The endlessly scrolling messages stopped instantly.

Ten minutes later, someone cautiously replied.

[Wait… Jessica, are you really getting married?]

Christopher was driving, so I replied myself.

[That’s right! I was always career–focused before, and he was patient enough to wait a whole decade for me.]

[Now that the timing’s finally right, we couldn’t be happier to start our life together.]

After sending that, I exited the company group chat.

At the same time, we arrived at Christopher’s home. As soon as the car stopped, his adoptive parents came out to greet us.

“Oh, sweetheart, you’re finally back. You have no idea, after Christopher said you agreed to marry him, he went crazy.”

“He’s been sleeping only two hours a day, determined to give you the perfect wedding.”

“Don’t worry. Even though you weren’t here, everything for the wedding has already been prepared. We’re using the highest local standards.”

“The only things left are the wedding dress and photos. You’ll need to try those yourself.”

Feeling the warmth of Christopher’s mother holding my hand, my eyes suddenly burned red.

I had been with Lucian for ten years, and my greatest wish had been to meet his parents and marry him.

After all those years of waiting, I had only turned myself into a joke.

I squeezed her hand back, the lump in my throat making my voice thick.

“Thank you… for everything. I’m so sorry for all the trouble.”
