Professor Sherman had recommended Sam’s project and pushed it through without the required review or

questioning.

He was suspended pending full review.

Harvard permanently expelled Mark and Sam and barred both of them from readmission.

Three months later, a federal court sentenced both of them to two years in prison for computer intrusion,

data theft, and fraud.

Professor Sherman was also convicted of taking bribes and falsifying student authorship records. Harvard fired him, and the findings were reported to the relevant academic bodies, effectively ending his career.

I was satisfied

I threw myself into a new project.

Two years later, after Mark was released from prison, he found me outside Harvard, where I was attending a

research conference.

“Emily, I was wrong. I know that now, and I’m so sorry.”

“Sam manipulated me. You have no idea how often she cried to me about feeling inferior to you and envying

everything you had.”

“I lost my head and fell for it. Please forgive me.”

“I only felt sorry for her. I never stopped loving you.”

I looked at his face.

Every trace of the person I’d once cared about was gone.

All I saw now was shamelessness.

“You felt sorry for her, so you gave her what was mine? You don’t get to steal from me to make someone

else feel better.”

I turned to walk away.

Mark grabbed my arm.

“Emily, I know you still care about me. You’re only saying this because you’re angry.”

“I swear it will never happen again. From now on, I’ll be faithful to you and only you.”

“You never even said we were done. I know you were waiting for me.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“I didn’t?”

“Then I guess I forgot.”

“We’re done, Mark. We’ve been done.”

Mark stared at me like I’d hit him.

“Emily, you’re that cold?”

“We were together for three years, Emily. Three years.”

“When you were sick, I brought your class notes to your house.”

“You were always forgetting things, so I kept tampons and tissues in my bag for you.”

“You loved the bagels from Tony’s Bagels & Deli, so I woke up two hours early every morning to get them for

you

“And you’re throwing away three years just because I felt sorry for someone and tried to help her?”

I looked at him coldly.

“Because you felt sorry for her?”

“Mark, can you honestly say you never cheated on me?”

“No. Never.”

I pulled out my phone and opened my cloud storage.

“Then what’s this?”

Mark’s face went crimson, and he could not say a word when he saw the messages

The messages showed exactly how intimate he and Sam had been

[Don’t worry I’m with Emily, but I’m all yours.]

The obscene exchange left Mark stunned and humiliated.
