Kaelen stood in the doorway. He didn’t say a word.

Frost was caked on his shoulders. He looked like something that had walked out of a

northern night and forgotten to put its face on.

Isabella went stiff. Then she slipped right back into the soft, fragile thing she’d been playing

for years.

“Alpha. You finally came.”

She made a weak motion, like she was trying to sit up.

“I’m useless. I couldn’t even bring you an heir.”

He walked over. Helped her up. Expressionless. His voice gave nothing away.

“Didn’t you tell me-if you can’t deliver an heir, your mission fails, and you die?”

Her eyes flickered.

She bit her lip. Like the words hurt to say.

“The system took pity on me. Gave me another chance.”

“As long as the Alpha makes me the new Luna, I can still finish the mission.”

Kaelen said nothing.

She tried the next move. Step back to push forward.

“Alpha-I know I’m not worthy. I never meant to fight Evelyn. Forget me.”

“Even if I die from a failed mission. I won’t blame you.”

“All right.”

Kaelen nodded.

Joy flared in her eyes-wild, fast.

She was opening her mouth to thank him when his hand closed around her throat.

His eyes were as cold as black ice on a winter lake.

“Then die.”

Her face went chalk-white. She thrashed.

“Alpha-what’s wrong? It’s me, it’s Isabella-”

Every word she spoke turned his eyes redder.

When she was about to black out, he threw her to the floor like something he’d picked up out

of the trash.

She lay there choking.

He bent down. Took a handful of her hair. Eyes bloody.

“You said the system would erase you if the mission failed. Didn’t you.”

“Let’s see. Are you really going to die?”

She was crying from the pain.

Up close to him like this, the fear finally caught up to her.

He watched her face. His grip tightened.

His other hand cracked across her cheek.

“Evelyn was your own sister. She never did a single thing to you. What gave you the right to

hound her to death?”

“I treated you well. For years. And you were lying to my face the whole time.”

“Isabella Frost. You’re really something.”

She heard it then-the killing intent-and forgot the pain. Scrambled up. Clutched at his

sleeve.

“Alpha-I did all of this because I loved you. That’s all it was.”

“Evelyn is gone. I’ll stay with you. I won’t leave. Ever.”

He looked down at her. Watched her cry that ugly, hopeless cry.

Just when she was about to break, he bent down and brushed the tears off the corner of her

eye with his thumb.

“Do you mean that?”

She froze.

Then, fast: “I swear on the Moon Goddess. Every word of it.”

“If you don’t believe me-if you want me to die right here, right now-I won’t say one word

against it.”

The fury in his eyes seemed to drain away.

After a long beat, he pulled her up. Folded her into his arms. Like nothing had happened.

“I owe you an apology, then.”

“You’re right. Evelyn isn’t coming back. Maybe I should hold onto the one I have left.”

Her face lit up.

If she’d looked up-just a little-she would have seen his eyes.

There was nothing in them.
