Goodbye, My Beloved Alpha Chapter 03

Goodbye, My Beloved Alpha Chapter 03

“You’ve been spending a lot of time with your assistant lately. Are the rumors true?”

Silas frowned. His hand went instinctively to his ring finger.

Nothing was there.

He was getting annoyed. The host stopped with personal questions and moved on to pack business.

When they talked business, he relaxed.

Clara, just the mention of my name seemed to irritate him.

I poured myself a glass of ice water, opened my laptop, and started darfting a resume.

I needed a real job. In a real city.

I worked into the evening. Then I stood, stretched, and started on dinner.

Three dishes. Soup. I sat at the table, thinking about Lucas next door. Had he eaten?

When Grandmother was alive, Silas often skipped meals. He’d get stomachaches.

I’d take food to his office. His secretary would make me wait an hour. Sometimes two.

Eventually, I guess he got used to it. He’d let me in. Let me interrupt. Make him eat something before returning to work.

I sighed, grabbed my jacket, and went next door. I knocked.

No answer. I was about to leave when the door swung open.

Lucas’s face shifted from annoyed to a bright grin the instant he saw me.

“Clara! I was just painting you, and you appeared.”

A paintbrush was still in his hand. Paint on his clothes. On his face. He looked a mess.

But that smile made it all seem perfect.

“You haven’t eaten, have you? Want to come over?”

His stomach growled. “God, yes. You’re amazing. Let me just set this down.”

The next few days fell into a rhythm.

He came over for dinner. Did the dishes afterward. Helped with the gardening.

If I had a brother, I’d have want him to be like Lucas.

I got some interview requests. Booked a flight.

The morning I was to leave, I went next door to say goodbye.

Lucas’s yard was full of black SUVs. Men in suits stood around like sentries.

I hesitated, then walked up.

One reached for me.

“Don’t touch her.”

Lucas walked out. His face wasn’t boyish anymore. It was cold. Hard.

He grabbed my hand, pulled me inside, and slammed the door.

“Stay out,” he said without looking back.

The men exchanged a glance. “Yes, sir.”

“Clara,here for breakfast?”

The easy smile was back.

“No. I came to say goodbye.”

His voice hitched. “Where are you going?”

I told him about the interviews. Said I wanted a fresh start.

“So you’re really over him?”

I blinked.

He blinked. “Don’t treat me like a kid. An artist see a lot.”

I smiled. “Yeah. I think I am.”

Where are you going?

“Manhattan.”

I’d thought about another city. One far from Silas. But I’d grown up there.Gone to school there. My friends were there.

Why should I be the one to leave?

“I’m coming with you. My family found me anyway.”
