My Husband Thinks I’m My Own Mistress Chapter 12

My Husband Thinks I’m My Own Mistress Chapter 12

I slept for six hours.

The sky was pitch black.

I rubbed my eyes and stumbled out of the lounge, only to find Kael still sitting at his desk

going through documents.

I climbed straight into his lap, wrapped my arms around his shoulders, and yawned.

“You missed quitting time. Why didn’t you wake me?”

“You looked too peaceful. I couldn’t bear to.”

He stroked my hair and tilted the document toward me.

“Your dad has a project that needs my investment, babe. Do you want me to fund it?”

I didn’t even open my eyes. “Invest if you want. Don’t if you don’t. Why ask me?”

“The project has potential… but I’m gonna pass.”

Kael picked up a pen and marked a big X across the page.

“Because they treated you like garbage.”

I arched one eyebrow.

“I thought you always said they were terrible to my sister.”

“They’re terrible to both. But you got it the worst, wife.”

Kael sighed and tapped my nose.

“Little bitter thing.”

Word got out that Kael nixed the investment.

My parents blew up my phone.

They knew Kael had figured out the switch with my sister. But once they heard he was crazy

about me, they didn’t care anymore.

Two daughters-either one was fine, as long as the investment came through.

They had no idea Kael would be this unforgiving.

My mom called me in a panic, demanding answers.

I put on my most innocent face.

“I have no clue! I’m just his wife. He doesn’t tell me his business moves.”

My mom sounded suspicious.

“He spoils you rotten. He spent millions on that jade bracelet for you at auction just

yesterday.”

“It’s all for show. I can’t even eat at his house without walking on eggshells. He yells at me

every day. I don’t want to live anymore.”

I sobbed and whined dramatically.

My mom went quiet. After a long moment, she spoke.

“I’ll ask your sister… You really don’t know how to handle a man. If it were Elara, she’d have

him wrapped around her finger… Forget it. Lila, fix this.”

“This project is your dad’s life’s work. He put every penny into it. He stayed up all night

worrying, lost half his hair. If Kael doesn’t invest, we’re finished.”

Mom sighed and hung up.

I set my phone down.

I sat up on the bed and stared blankly out the window.

Mom hadn’t talked to me this long in years… Not since Elara came back, not since I turned eighteen. Guilt had broken her, twisted her, and she’d shut me out completely.

I hated them.

But hearing they were about to lose everything left a sour taste in my mouth.

I smiled bitterly and got up to wash up.

When I turned, Kael was leaning in the doorway, watching me with a complicated look.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, smiling.

“Your family’s mess-if you ask, I’ll help. It’s no big deal, wife.”

I shook my head immediately. “Don’t.”

He stared at me in silence.

He stepped forward, lifted me into his arms, and sat me on the bed. He kissed the tip of my

nose.

“Wife… do you really hate your parents that much?”

I kept smiling.

“Don’t be silly. I just don’t want to drag you into my family’s problems-”

“I looked into your family. It’s messed up. One kid raised until adulthood, the other only after. That warped upbringing messed with you and your sister.”

“You can’t fully hate them, can’t fully love them. You want to watch them crash, but you can’t

stand to see them truly destroyed.”

“So you and your sister want me to take down the Chen family. Let me carry all the blame. You get your revenge without the guilt.”

“Am I right, babe?”

In that second, my eyes locked with Kael’s dark, sharp gaze.

My fake smile melted off my face.

Thump. Thump.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

He’d seen right through every dark, twisted part of me.

I slowly lifted my hand.

I wanted to strangle him.

Kael caught my wrist before I could move.

He looked at me with pity.

“But you know what, babe?”

“If they actually went bankrupt, if they ended up homeless and crying… you’d still hurt.”

“Because-”

He paused.

“You don’t hate them completely.”

My breath went shallow.

I wanted to laugh, to scream at him for saying it out loud.

Why not let them ruin themselves first? Let me have my revenge, then let me wonder why I

didn’t feel happy.

Regret? Pain? I’d deal with it later. Was I any better now?

They were my parents.

They once loved me.

Then they stopped. What was I supposed to do? Kill them?

I couldn’t love fully. Couldn’t hate fully.

In the end, I was the only one suffering.

slapped him as hard as I could.

“What do you want from me?!”

“I didn’t mean anything by it, babe.”

He pulled me into a tight hug and rubbed my back, his jaw tight.

“I just think you, your sister, and your parents… you all need therapy.”

A whole family of crazy.

I heard his unspoken words loud and clear.

I pushed him away coldly. “So?”

He felt me shaking and held me closer, voice frustrated.

“Okay, okay, my bad. I shouldn’t have brought it up.”

He pressed his lips together, lost and torn.

“Babe… should I invest or not? If I do, you’ll resent me now. If I don’t, you’ll resent me when

they fall apart. I-”

He held my gaze.

I turned my head away.

Kael understood. He laughed bitterly.

“You really need me to take the fall, huh?”

He ruffled my hair roughly and let out a heavy sigh.

“Fine… whatever. Oh, right. When your sister ran away before the wedding-she eloped to the

States, right?”

The topic shift was so sudden I froze.

I frowned. “I don’t know where she went. Why do you care?”

“It’s something funny.”

He smiled faintly.
