My Fiance Said Betrayal Was Mutual Revenge Chapter 07

That last line hit Kyler like a poisoned arrow straight through the heart. He stared at the

words, uncomprehending. His mind went blank. His body shook violently.

Killed my mother? Mrs. Peterson had just finished her surgery. The doctors had said the

treatment was working. Brynn was the one who’d been knocked out by Mrs. Peterson’s slap.

Got a concussion. How could Mrs. Peterson be dead?

He bolted out of the bedroom, his legs barely holding him, and dialed Dr. Morrison, Mrs.

Peterson’s attending physician. “Dr. Morrison! My Mrs. Peterson-she’s alive, right?!”

The doctor’s voice came back sharp and merciless. “Oh, now you remember her

mother?”

“Three days ago, when she was dying, her daughter was screaming for help, and you told the nurses to go treat some girl who didn’t have a damn scratch on her.”

“By the time anyone got back to her, it was too late. She died in her daughter’s arms. And the hospital’s still stuck with the bill. Who do you think’s gonna cover that?”

shattered.

The truth was ripped open and laid bare in front of him. Kyler’s whole heart

The phone slipped through his fingers, hit the floor, and shattered into pieces. He

collapsed to his knees and drove his forehead into the ground. Again. And again.

The sound that tore out of him was barely human. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry… Mrs.

Peterson…” His voice came out shredded, broken beyond repair. But he couldn’t feel the pain.

He just kept slamming his head against the floor until blood pooled across the wood. Finally,

he blacked out.

When he woke up, he was a shell, drained of everything. He dragged himself back to the

bedroom, clutched the things Elowen had left behind, and cried until there was nothing left.

Three days later, the police called. “Sorry, Mr. Harlan. Your girlfriend may have left the

country. We’ve been unable to track any information on her whereabouts.”

Left the country? Kyler let out a bitter laugh, tasting the words. Elowen. You hate me so

much you’d leave the whole country behind just so I’d never find you. Is that it?

He downed another bottle. Then another. He drank himself into madness. Empty bottles

piled up in the bedroom like a monument. Broken glass surrounded him.

When Brynn showed up, she found him sitting there, the soles of his feet studded with

shards, his flesh a raw, bloody mess. His palms. His arms. His legs. All covered in gashes.

For a moment, fear flickered through her. But she steeled herself and snatched the bottle

from his hand. “Kyler! How long are you going to wallow like this?! If Elowen were here and

saw you like this, do you really think she’d still want you?”

Kyler lifted his gaze. His bloodshot eyes landed on her. For a split second, it looked like

hope. “Brynn…”

Her eyes lit up. She threw her arms around him. “I’m here, Ky. I’m right here. Elowen’s

gone. But it’s okay. You still have me. We can finally be together. No one standing in our way.”

The next instant, his hands locked around her throat. He squeezed with murderous

intent, watching her face twist in agony. “Does it hurt? This is exactly what Mrs. Peterson felt

when she died.”

“Brynn. You ungrateful bitch. You watched her die. And to make me angry, you lied about having a concussion. You pulled the nurses away. You made her miss her last chance. She

died in Elowen’s arms.”

“Tell me why! Elowen was so good. So gentle. Her mother was her entire world. And you

made her watch her own mother die! Have you forgotten everything that family did to save

you?!”

Brynn choked, her voice a strangled sob. “Kyler! Everything I did-I did it for you!”

“For me?!” His roar shook the room as he snatched up a blade. “Or for your precious

future?! You think I don’t know your game?”

“You already had your overseas connections lined up. You even handed over my shares

of the Harlan Group to the Delin Corporation! Brynn! You’re still playing innocent?!”

He drove the knife straight toward her eye. A hair’s breadth away, he stopped. He hurled her aside. She was paralyzed, mind gone blank with terror.

Kyler looked down at her and smiled. It was the most frightening thing she’d ever seen.

“Oh, I remember now. Before Mrs. Peterson saved you, who were your parents planning to

sell you to?

“Wasn’t it that rural bachelor in your village? Fifty years old and never married?”

Brynn’s eyes went impossibly wide. “Kyler-what are you going to do?!”

“An eye for an eye.”
