Then Harlan’s voice rose again, more frantic and desperate than ever. “Ivy! Wait! I’m wrong!

I’m so wrong!”

Behind me, he kept explaining, his voice thick with regret. “I only took Liora as my chosen

mate because she saved my life!”

“When I was caught in an enemy trap years ago, she risked her life to save me. I promised to

be her mate for six years, to give her a place in Streamveil Pack! I never meant to hurt you!”

But I didn’t stop walking.

His voice grew hoarser. “I’ll dissolve the contract with her right now! Just give me one more

chance, okay?”

“Next year,

when the lottery comes, I’ll make sure you draw my name. I want to be your mate.

I want to stay by your side forever.”

But no one wanted his belated remorse.

So I said, “Don’t bother.”

As if those words had struck him like a blow, Harlan’s voice shot up, cracking with disbelief.

“What do you mean, don’t bother?”

“Ivy, just listen to me! I really didn’t mean to lie to you!”

“I just…”

“It’s too late for him to say any of this now,” my wolf cursed him angrily. “What a shameless

cur!”

I said coldly, “Did you really think no one knew you broke the crystal with your name on it five

years in a row?”

The crowd erupted in shocked whispers.

A wolf dared to tamper with the sacred ceremony! It was an insult to the Moon Goddess

herself.

The Moon Priestess lowered her head in shame.

I continued, “I’ve known about your little scheme for a long time. And I heard your stupid plan

with my own ears. There’s no need to deny it. I’ve heard enough.”

“You broke the crystal in the Moon Priestess’s temple. You said you wanted to finish your six

years as Liora’s chosen mate before becoming my fated mate. I heard every word loud and

clear.”

“You know?” Harlan muttered to himself, all the color draining from his face.

His eyes held nothing but boundless panic.

So his perfect, foolproof plan had been seen through all along.

His so-called love and secrecy were nothing but self-deception.

“No! That’s not how it is!”

“Ivy, let me explain! I didn’t mean to deceive you! I just…”

But he didn’t get to finish. The enraged Valerius had already started dragging him away.

“I’ve had enough of your endless blathering! The princess doesn’t want you! Did you not hear

her? Get out of her sight!”

Harlan struggled, the veins bulging in his neck. “Let go of me! I need to apologize to Ivy! I

need to explain myself! I never meant to hurt her!”

“I challenge you to a duel of honor!” Valerius snarled.

Many of the wolves looked worried. Valerius had already killed quite a few challengers in

duels of honor.

“Valerius, calm down. You still have the rest of the ceremony to complete,” my father spoke up then.

“Oh… yes…” Valerius suddenly became calm. His gray-white eyes turned to me, and he nearly looked away.

Was he… blushing?

He stood beside me. I’d lost count of how many times I’d noticed how tall he was.

I was already strong for a she-wolf, but next to him, I still looked small. When he got close,

my mouth went dry. My wolf stirred restlessly.

“Moon Priestess, you have done much for us…” my father’s tone shifted. “So I will not hold you accountable. But you must leave the temple.”

The Moon Priestess lowered her head, looked at me, and said with deep guilt, “I’m so sorry,

Princess…

Then she hurried away. Aside from this, she had actually been a fairly decent Moon

Priestess.

“As for you, Harlan Gareth.” My father’s voice turned cold.

“You dared to defile the Moon Goddess’s ceremony. You must be punished. From today onward, you are no longer the Alpha of Streamveil Pack!”

Gasps rippled through the crowd. For a wolf to be stripped of their Alpha status by the Wolf King was even worse than being exiled from the pack.

Harlan collapsed to the ground in shock. Seeing him so broken, I should have felt something.

We had been fated mates, after all.

But Valerius took my hand, his touch unexpectedly gentle. His hand was rough and broad, wrapping around mine completely.

His warmth seeped into me, bringing a little comfort to my shattered heart.
