I Work For My Roommate’s Love Pool Chapter 10

Dr. Rainer Cosmo was the first to show up. He looked haggard, with heavy dark circles under his

eyes.

When he saw me, his expression was a cocktail of agony and regret.

“Evie, I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened to me. It was like I was blinded by something… I actually thought Chloe had merit. I said such horrible things to you. Can you ever forgive me?”

I leaned against the doorframe, scanning him. He still had that polished, elite look, but it felt hollow

now.

“Dr. Cosmo,” I said lazily.

“Is your latest paper finished? Have you finalized the list of students you failed? If you have time to play the tortured lover here, you have time to actually contribute something to the field of

education.”

Rainer’s face went stiff.

Next was Miles Huston. He was lugging a stack of limited-edition books and rare vinyl records, his

face etched with guilt.

“Evie, I’m an asshole. How could I ever think you were materialistic while Chloe was the intellectual

one? I must have been blind. I collected these for you. Please, don’t be angry with me anymore.”

I took the items from his hands and, right in front of him, opened a campus second-hand

marketplace app and listed them all.

“Miles, knowledge is priceless, but these objects aren’t. Thanks for the donation. They’ll make

great additions to my research fund.”

The smile froze on Miles’s lips.

Griffin and Caleb showed up too.

One wanted to rent out the entire Varsity Gym for a grand “apology” fireworks display, while the other offered to hand me the Student Body Presidency on a silver platter.

Their stories were all the same.

They claimed they felt “possessed”, suddenly falling for a talentless woman while feeling a bizarre, inexplicable hatred toward me.

They begged for a second chance. They wanted things back the way they were.

I looked at the four of them standing in a row, and a sudden, sharp laughter bubbled up in my

chest.

“You never loved Chloe,” I said calmly, stating the truth I’d known for a long time. “And you never loved me, either.”

“What you loved was a perfect female symbol, someone who could soothe your fragile egos and satisfy your need for control and protection.”

“You loved yourselves. We were just the mascots you chose for the role.”

“Well, this mascot is resigning.”

[Yes! The female side character is a badass! None of these guys matter. They don’t even know

what a heart is.]

[Don’t call her the ‘side’ anymore. Evelyn and Chloe can both be the leads of their own stories. And

so can we.]

I slammed the door, shutting those four shocked, pained faces out of my world forever.

Later, I heard Chloe Sterling was asked to leave the university.

On her last day, she came to see me one more time There was no screaming, no cursing.

She just stood there in silence for a long time before asking, “That reverse-tracking program, can

you teach me?”

I looked at her for a second, then tossed her a copy of Introduction to Quantum Computing.

“Start with this.”

Later on, I got into the direct Ph.D. program at the Rhodes Institute for Advanced Study.

At the convocation ceremony, scanning through the roster of new recruits, I saw a familiar name.

Chloe Sterling.

She had actually done it. She’d worked her way into the Computer Science department of another top-tier university on her own merit.

We didn’t stop to catch up. As we passed each other in the corridor, we simply exchanged a look of silent understanding.

The sun was bright, and the road ahead was long.

No men, no Systems. Our lives were finally beginning.
