After I Laid Five Golden Dragon Eggs, the Dragon King Regretted Chapter 07

By the time I reached the stronghold, it was pitch black. 

No, not just the sky. 

The Trial clouds had swallowed everything. 

Red–gold lightning coiled and churned in the clouds, each strike threatening to tear the earth asunder. 

The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, making every breath burn. 

I looked up and saw Valerius. 

He was at the very center of the storm. 

His dragon form was coiled in the air, scales torn, his body covered in blood. 

Bolt after bolt struck him. Each one forced him lower, and each time he forced himself back up. 

One of his horns was snapped, and golden dragon blood flowed from his brow, dripping onto the scorched earth. 

He was failing. 

I charged forward. 

A hand reached out from the side, gripping my arm like a vice. 

It was a white–bearded Elder, his face dark with rage: “Ember! You dare show your face!” 

Another Elder surrounded me, pointing an accusing finger: “If you hadn’t interrupted his Trial a century ago, the Great 

Heavenly Trial wouldn’t have come so soon! You jinx! Wasn’t harming the King once enough for you?” 

“Don’t you know the Great Heavenly Trial decides the fate of our entire tribe? What is a powerless ‘Ungifted‘ like you doing here?” 

I was shoved back, but my eyes remained fixed on the man in the sky. 

Another bolt struck, and Valerius convulsed. 

“He doesn’t have his Heart–Scale! He will die!” I broke free 

from the Elder’s grip, my voice louder than I ever thought 

possible. “He gave it to me! And he didn’t use the Wild–kin 

Aegis. If you don’t help him, he’s going to die up there!” 

The Elders‘ faces turned pale. 

“He removed his Heart–Scale? Is he mad? What will he use to 

block the thunder–his life?” 

“Fool! Absolute fool! We told him to seek the Aegis, but he 

disobeyed. Now without his scale, he’s choosing to take the 

whole tribe with him!” 

“To throw away the lives of the entire tribe for one woman… what kind of King is he!” 

Everyone was cursing the King, but no one moved. 

A flame of fury burned through me. 

I shoved past the Elders and ran toward Valerius. 

Behind me, a chorus of shouts erupted. 

“Stop her!” 

“She’s mad!” 

“If she wants to die, don’t let her drag us down!” 

I ignored them. 

The closer I got to the center, the stronger the wind and the 

louder the thunder. 

I felt the stray electricity in the air searing my skin, but I 

wouldn’t stop. 

Valerius returned to his human form, kneeling in the dirt, 

head bowed as blood dripped onto the charred ground. 

Sensing something, he slowly looked up. 

The moment he saw me, he froze. 

His expression shifted from shock to horror, and then to pure 

rage. 

“Ember! Get back!” 

Another bolt of lightning descended. He threw himself over me, shielding me with his body as he took the hit. 

His frame shuddered, and blood splattered near my feet. 

Even then, he was fierce: “What are you doing here!” 

I hung the Heart–Scale back around his neck. 

Valerius looked down at it, his pupils shrinking. He reached 

out to tear it off and give it back.

I held his hand, stood on my tiptoes, and kissed his forehead. “I’ve come to shield you from the Trial.” 

Valerius was livid. “Are you joking? How could you possibly shield me?” 

I didn’t answer. Instead, I remembered something my mother once told me. 

Before she left, she said only one thing: 

“If something happens, just open your arms. We are the most powerful race in this world!” 

I didn’t know how to fight, I had no magic, and I couldn’t even carry five eggs at once. 

But the one thing I was best at in this life was protecting my 

young. 

I suddenly grew massive. My arms transformed into giant 

wings. 

I spread them wide and shielded Valerius beneath them.
