After I Laid Five Golden Dragon Eggs, the Dragon King Regretted Chapter 01

My mother had far too much alcohol drink when she was carrying me, which resulted in me being born a step slower than everyone else.

The Dragon King collapsed at my doorstep while undergoing his Heavenly Trial, and I took him in.

When he awoke, he asked if there was anything I desired.

I had heard that Aethelgard was grand and comfortable, and that one was served the finest sea-bass at every meal, so I told him I wanted to return to the stronghold with him.

To my surprise, he misinterpreted my intent and directly made me his Dragon Queen.

I spent a hundred years in Aethelgard in a daze, living a life of absolute luxury where every need was attended to.

Then, one day, I felt a sharp discomfort in my belly. With a sudden burst of effort, I laid five drakeling eggs.

I ran to find the Dragon King, but before I could utter a word of the news, he thrust a divorce agreement at me:

“You have been wed to me for a hundred years and have failed to produce an heir. The Dragon Lords have no need for a Queen as powerless as you.”

As I prepared to protest, several lines of shimmering script drifted across my vision:

[Infertility is just an excuse for the lead to cast her aside; the real reason for the annulment is that he has encountered his fated lady.]

[There is no helping it; no supporting character can defeat the female lead, especially when this one is a simpleton.]

[She should take this chance to flee. Even if you stay, you’ll just be a fool. The male lead will tear out your heart and soul for the sake of the true heroine.]

I am a supporting character?

I watched the text, dumbstruck, and made the quickest reaction of my entire life.

“Fine. We annul it, right now!”

Valerius’s face instantly turned a grim shade of iron.

Yet, I felt as though I had forgotten something important.

No matter. Nothing is more precious than keeping my own life.

Valerius’s expression was difficult to read—partly frustrated, partly sorrowful.

I had only seen such a complex look on him once before, when the High Council of Elders forced him to take a wife.

I took the divorce agreement and gave him a brief hug. “Don’t be upset. Once I am gone, you can go find your fated lady.”

Valerius’s body went rigid.

I immediately felt a pang of regret.

Even though I knew he loved someone else, I shouldn’t have been so blunt about exposing it.

I had said the wrong thing again.

After offering my “consolation,” I prepared to leave, but he caught my arm. “I will have someone escort you home.”

I was about to refuse, but he gripped my hand tightly and began issuing meticulous instructions:

“Once you return, do not wander off. If you get lost, no one will come looking for you.”

“If others bully you, do not just stand there like a statue. If you must fight back, then fight.”

“And that little Wood-Sprite living next to you—stop playing with her. She only wants to trick you out of your gold.”

After finishing his long-winded lecture, Valerius pressed a scale into my palm. “Most importantly, take this. You must wear it at all times; never take it off as long as you live.”

Seeing him act as if he were delivering a final testament, I felt perplexed:

“Can’t you give me something useful? I don’t want a scale; I want gold.”

My mother ran off right after giving birth to me, leaving me to grow up alone in Briar Hollow.

Because I had no money to move, I could only stay there and endure the bullying of the local crow-shifters. That was why I had thought of following Valerius to Aethelgard in the first place.

I thought I would never have to worry about my next meal again, but here I was, being abandoned.

Just as a delayed sense of sadness began to wash over me, those strange words appeared again.

[Whoa, the lead gave his Heart-Scale to her?]

[A dragon only has one Heart-Scale. With it, she’ll never be harmed. If she doesn’t want it, give it to me!]

[But seriously, does the lead really not love her? Why would he give her something so vital?]

[He is the Dragon King; his sense of duty is immense. This must be his way of compensating her.]

Fortunately, Valerius was long accustomed to my behavior. He fastened the scale directly around my neck and infused a bit of his mana into my palm, telling me to call for Aethelgard if I ever found myself in true danger.

“But Briar Hollow is quite far from Aethelgard,” I blinked. “Can’t I just keep living here?”

Valerius’s eyes reddened. As if making a grueling decision, he shook his head. “No.”

Fine then.

It wasn’t that I was desperate to stay.

But… don’t drakeling eggs need to be kept in water?

Oh, right!

I had laid five drakeling eggs!

By the time I remembered, I was already out the door. I was about to turn back and tell Valerius when I collided with someone approaching from behind.

I tumbled to the ground. Before I could react, the other person had already stood up and started shouting, “Where did this blind wretch come from? How dare you bump into a Princess!”

After her outburst, she scrutinized me from head to toe.

Upon seeing my face, a flash of surprise crossed her eyes, followed by a haughty lift of her chin.

“So, you are Valerius’s simpleton Queen! Do you have any idea who I am?”
