Last Life She Killed Me for My Rich Husband, This Life I Let Her Have Him Chapter 04

Not even a week after the wedding, Charles left on a business trip. His job kept him constantly on the move, barely stopping long enough to catch his breath.

Before he left, he tossed me a big ring of keys. “Take any car you want from the garage. Don’t stay cooped up at home.”

“Go shopping, get spa treatments, have afternoon tea. Do whatever makes you happy. My wife’s job is to enjoy life. When a woman lives well, it makes the man look good.”

I looked up at him sweetly and nodded eagerly, almost too quickly.

After he left, I got bored on my own, so I packed up some stuff and went to my parents’ house. Just so happened that, my sister and Benjamin were there too.

They were newlyweds, still glued to each other in that honeymoon glow. My sister’s face was all smiles as she bragged to our mom.

“Benjamin is so good to me. He cooks for me. He takes care of everything for me.” Then she saw me, alone, and puffed up even more.

Leaning forward to peer behind me, she smirked. “Oh, you came back alone? Where’s my dear brother-in-law? People are going to talk if you show up alone like this.”

“And you even carried everything yourself? Not like Benjamin. He’d never let me lift a finger.”

I glanced at that sad little bag of fruit and the box of discounted milk sitting by the door and curled my lip in disgust.

“He’s so poor, he really can’t afford to let you exert yourself. What if you slipped away one day? Where would he find another wife this easy to keep?”

“Mom, come help me.”

Mom hurried over to take my bags. Luxury skincare, organic superfoods, artisanal coffee.

My sister lost it again. “Just because you’ve got some cash, you have to show off.”

I put on an innocent face. “This is all pretty basic stuff. Just because you can’t afford them doesn’t mean I’m showing off. You’re just being bitter.”

She had no comeback. Benjamin’s face turned red, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

Mom played peacemaker. “You’re both my daughters. I’d be happy even if you came empty-handed. Stop bickering and wash up for dinner.”

At the table, the atmosphere turned stiff. To lighten the mood, my dad brought something up.

“So, when are you two planning to have kids? I’m getting old. I’d like to hold a grandchild.”

And immediately got a sharp look from Mom. “If you can’t say anything useful, don’t say anything at all.”

Dad just chuckled. My sister, though, jumped on it eagerly. She was talking to our parents, but her eyes were fixed on me.

Provocation.

“Benjamin says he’ll leave it all up to me. When to have kids, whether to have them. I think we’re young, and I want to build my career first. What about you, Emma?”

Then she covered her mouth. “Oh, silly me. Emma married into high society now. She probably doesn’t get a say in whether she has kids. Not like us, we’re free to do as we please.”

She emphasized “free.” She still hadn’t realized that poverty and freedom rarely go hand in hand.

I picked up a piece of spare rib and put it in her bowl, sighing.

“It’s never easy living under someone else’s thumb. But at least I have money and free time, and I don’t have to struggle to get by anymore.”

Then I shifted gears. “By the way, have you paid off all those debts yet? Because you really shouldn’t have kids until you have.”

My sister’s face went pale, then flushed.

Benjamin glared at me, his face bright red. “So what if you have money? Don’t look down on us. I don’t have much now, but I swear I’ll give Olivia a good life.”

“Come on, honey, let’s go. Trust me. I’m going to make you the happiest woman in the world.”

In the bitter cold of a late Kingswood autumn, they rode home together on a beat-up old scooter.

Mom watched them disappear down the road and shook her head. “A few sweet words from a man and she’s already lost. She’s in for a world of hurt.”
