My Lawyer Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for a Pregnant Fraud Chapter 06

The firm felt like a funeral parlor the next day.

Caspian had to step back in and run things. My departure left a void no one could fill.

And the situation was getting worse.

What about the MacBook Pro Camila destroyed with her latte?

Most of those files weren’t backed up yet. Then Caspian slammed it to the floor and finished the job.

I’d been lead counsel on all those cases.

Now I was gone. The prep work was gone. Everyone had to stay late and rebuild everything from scratch.

Lowell & Finch LLP didn’t run on hierarchy. It ran on competence. People were furious, and they weren’t

hiding it.

The attorney across from Sage, spent three hours hammering out documents. Then he hurled his keyboard at

the floor.

“This is a goddamn disaster.”

Caspian stepped out of his office right then.

He surveyed the scene with his characteristic dead-calm.

“I know overtime is rough. Nobody wants to be here. But we don’t have a choice.”

“Marlowe’s files are gone. These cases won’t wait.”

He paused. Two beats. Then he kept going.

“And for the record-if anyone had stepped up to protect a pregnant woman that day, we wouldn’t be in this

mess.”

Silence.

The whole floor went still.

Then Sage Holloway stood up.

She walked over to Caspian. Slow. Deliberate. Her mouth curled into something that wasn’t a smile

“Lowell. Is there a watermelon sitting on your neck?”

Sage didn’t do this. Sage was the calm one. The one who smoothed things over.

This was a first.

Caspian blinked. His brow furrowed. “There’s no need for personal attacks.”

“If I were attacking you personally, you’d already be on the floor.”

Her voice stayed level. Ice-cold.

“Everyone in that conference room saw exactly what happened. Marlowe never touched Camila. Not once.”

Caspian’s expression hardened.

He didn’t believe her.

“You and Marlowe are close. I understand loyalty. But I expect a lawyer in this firm to maintain some

objectivity. Don’t rewrite what happened.”

Sage let out a short, bitter laugh.

“Wow. I really wasn’t wrong about you. A watermelon. A whole damn watermelon.”

Nobody talked to Caspian Lowell like that. Not in his own firm.

His voice dropped. “Sage. If you don’t want to be here, you can join Marlowe right out that door.”

Sage reached up and unclipped her employee ID badge.

Her smile widened.

“You think I want to stay? I’ve worked under Marlowe since day one. She’s the only boss I’ve ever had here.”

“Oh. And you don’t know yet, do you?”

“Marlowe’s pregnant. Three months. It’s yours.”

Caspian’s whole body locked up.

Every person in the room went dead silent.

“But I’m guessing she didn’t tell you. Why would she? Nobody wants to raise a kid with a man who keeps choosing another woman over her.”

Sage swept her gaze across the office.

“Take my advice. All of you. Find somewhere else to work. A boss this blind will get you buried under a dumpster fire and blame you for the smoke.”

She said it lightly, almost casually.

Caspian grabbed her arm. His composure shattered.

“What did you say? Marlowe’s pregnant?”

“Where did you hear that? She told you?”

Sage looked at him. At the panic cracking through his face. Something almost like pity flickered in her eyes.

“You confessed to Marlowe that you’d been unfaithful. She collapsed at the engagement reception.”

“I took her to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. I heard the doctor say it myself.”

Caspian’s face went white.

He stumbled back two steps.

“No. That’s not-it can’t be that exact-”

Sage nodded slowly. She held her hands out, palms up.

“Yeah. It’s exactly that exact. You thought you were just protecting Camila Quinn? You destroyed the last

shred of hope Marlowe was holding onto.”

“You keep telling all of us it was an accident. You keep hinting the baby might not even be yours. And then you defend that girl like Marlowe is nothing.”

Before Caspian could respond, someone else stood up.

“Lowell. We all saw what happened in that conference room. Camila threw that latte on purpose. She missed the laptop at first. Marlowe never said a word to her.”

Another voice joined in.

“You’re the one who wrecked Marlowe’s laptop. You’re the one who humiliated her. She didn’t do a damn

thing.”

“This one’s on you. Don’t blame her for walking.”

Caspian dropped.

He didn’t sit. He fell. Right there on the floor, legs giving out like someone had cut the strings.

His breath came in ragged gasps. His eyes were unfocused.

Then he was on his feet and running.
