I Ran Away Carrying the Mafia King’s Child Chapter 01

Morning sickness had me so worn down I was practically dehydrated, and my gnawing unease finally hit its breaking point.

I didn’t dare go to the hospital for a checkup.

Because I was the one who’d spent a night with Massimo Romano, the Mafia Don of the Romano family, at a hotel a month ago.

Right now, every private detective in Velmora was practically on Massimo’s payroll.

They were combing the entire city, searching every corner for me.

I had no choice but to ask an old schoolmate to anonymously mail me a pregnancy test from another city.

Two bright red lines blazed back at me, glaringly vivid.

It was over.

I flushed the pregnancy test down the drain, erasing all evidence without a trace.

I’d always hidden myself behind baggy white lab coats and a chest binder, barely passing for a man.

But once my stomach started showing, how was I ever going to hide it?

I collapsed onto the lounge sofa for half an hour, until the clinic door was shoved open without ceremony.

Massimo walked in, dressed in a bespoke suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and long legs—only his handsome face was dark enough to drip with fury.

His assistant followed, familiar with the routine. “Dr. Ferraro, Don Romano’s tooth is acting up again.”

I wanted to scream internally, yet I still plastered on a professional fake smile.

After all, I was just an employee at this elite dental clinic, and Massimo was its biggest investor.

He lay back in the dental chair, irritably yanking at his tie, and ordered, “Go easy. It hurts like hell.”

I flipped on the exam light.

Beneath the harsh glow, his flawless face looked faintly pale.

“Chronic pulpitis, acute flare-up. You need a root canal.”

He hummed in reply and closed his eyes.

The anesthesia kicked in, and I began the procedure.

The clinic fell quiet, save for the faint clink of dental tools.

Suddenly, he opened his eyes. “Dr. Ferraro, did you lose anything at Obsidian Crown Hotel?”

The probe in my hand nearly jabbed straight through his gum.

“No. Why would Don Romano ask that?”

He didn’t miss the split-second rigidity in my posture, a cold smirk tugging at his lips. “I found something rather interesting.”

He nodded for his assistant to hand over a velvet pouch.

Inside lay a tiny iris-shaped earring.

I’d bought it with my first scholarship back in college.

As a doctor, I never wore any jewelry—only this small stud in my upper ear cartilage, usually hidden by my hair.

That night had been chaotic beyond reason.

I’d barely relaxed when he drawled on, “This earring is a limited piece by an independent designer. One of a kind.”

Cold sweat prickled down my spine.

I forced calm into my voice. “It’s just an earring. It could easily be a replica.”

“Is it?” His gaze locked onto me, sharp and piercing. “I’ve already had my assistant pull every custom jewelry record in the entire city.”

I met his eyes, testing the waters. “Don Romano, going to all this trouble… if you find the woman, do you plan to keep her as your lover?”

“Keep her as a lover?” Massimo laughed like I’d just told the funniest joke of the year.

His smile faded, his expression turning dark as he stared me down with a cold sneer. “The woman who dares scheme against me…”

“I’ll make her wish she’d never been born.”

A chill ran straight down my spine.
