Suddenly, my mother-in-law called me.

I didn’t hesitate to answer.

“Ellie, did you see the message I sent you?” Her tone was as casual as ever.

“No,” I said, my voice cold as ice.

“Are you at the grocery store? It’s a bit loud on your end.”

“Check the text I sent. I can’t hear you clearly; send me an iMessage.”

She hung up.

I checked my texts and saw a message she sent twenty minutes ago:

“Ellie, a relative back home just had a baby, and I need to send a gift.”

“I’m short on cash. Transfer another $20,000 to me. These social obligations are important; we can’t be rude.”

My knuckles turned white as I gripped the phone, my blood boiling.

Not only was this whole family lying to me, but they also expected me to be the sucker who pays for the illegitimate daughter’s gift! I laughed out of sheer anger.

I didn’t reply.

She sent another follow-up:

“Hurry up and send it.”

“We have to follow etiquette. The Sterlings cannot lose face.”

I still didn’t reply.

I was waiting for her to show up here! A moment later, another notification popped up.

She complained: “I always thought you were sensible.”

“I didn’t expect you to be like this.”

“Forget it. If you won’t give it, I’ll find another way.”

A mocking sneer formed on my lips.

All those words about treating me like her own daughter and me being the best daughter-in-law.

“The Sterlings are so blessed to have you.”

It was all a lying joke.

Brooke Harrison came back while she was on the phone.

I clearly heard Julian’s voice from the receiver:

“Babe, Mom prepared another piece of jewelry for our little girl.”

“She doesn’t need more; she has plenty,” Brooke said.

Julian specifically added:

“This one is different. It’s a Dragon charm, spiritually blessed in Sedona.”

“It has a special meaning; it’s not just a regular piece of gold.”

My vision blurred with rage; I was on the verge of an outburst.

Two days ago, when our son left for summer camp,

my mother-in-law told him to take off his gold jewelry so he wouldn’t lose it.

After he took it off, he handed it to her for safekeeping.

I never thought she would give my son’s protective charm to Julian’s illegitimate daughter! Brooke smiled sweetly:

“Then thank Mom for me. She’s so thoughtful.”

My mother-in-law’s voice then came through the phone:

“Don’t mention it. It’s what a grandmother should do.”

“You gave me a precious granddaughter; I should be thanking you.”

“We’re almost there. Thanks for looking after the guests.”

Hanging up, Brooke went to reach for the baby, but then saw new guests arriving nearby.

She rushed off to host again.

I continued to hold their illegitimate child.

The girl was incredibly quiet in my arms.

I looked at her silently and whispered mockingly:

“Your celebration will be one that everyone remembers for the rest of their lives.”

Finally, I heard the voices of Julian’s family as they made their late entrance.

I cradled his illegitimate daughter and walked toward the stage.

Just as he asked Brooke, “Babe, where’s our baby?” I picked up the microphone, my voice cutting through the hall like ice:
