He Chased Me to Spite His Enemy. So I Left Him at the Altar Chapter 07

Six days before the wedding. 

That girl posted again: **I want to give him my first time. Then I’ll have no regrets.** 

The photo was a hotel key card. A hotel in L.A. I couldn’t be 

bothered to read the name. 

Right then, Dorian Thorne was in the kitchen cooking. 

I heard his phone ring. 

He picked it up, and his expression shifted. He glanced at me 

from the corner of his eye–I just sat in the living room and 

smiled at him. 

He turned off the stove and walked out to the balcony. 

When he came back in, he was already taking off his apron. “Something came up at work. I already made dinner. Go ahead and eat, I’ll be back soon.” 

I smiled and asked him: “You’re in that big of a hurry… you’re not going on a date, are you?” 

Dorian Thorne’s eyes flickered away–werewolves rarely 

break eye contact like that. That was his first tell. Then he 

pinched my cheek. “Don’t talk crazy. It’s actually important.” 

Another lie. 

I tugged on his sleeve. “I’m not feeling well today. Can you please stay?” 

“Where does it hurt?” 

Dorian Thorne touched my face. 

I pointed at my chest. “Here.” 

He smirked and kissed my forehead. “You little liar. Don’t be like that. I’ll be back before you know it. I promise I’ll come home early tonight.” 

Still leaving anyway. 

I hadn’t let him touch me in a while. Werewolves‘ sex drives peak around the full moon, and the full moon was in four days. He must’ve been feeling pretty desperate, right? 

Once he left, I followed him. 

For someone usually so cautious–with senses and instincts a hundred times sharper than a human’s–he must’ve been in a real hurry not to notice me behind him. 

He didn’t even park straight. Left the car unlocked and 

everything. 

I waited outside until after midnight. Dorian Thorne never 

came out. 

When he got home, I pretended to be asleep. 

The sound of water running in the shower just made me 

restless. 

There was a knot in my chest so tight I could barely breathe. 

A moment later, the bed dipped, and he pulled me into his 

arms. 

I tried to pull away. 

“Don’t move. I just want to hold you.” 

He kissed my hair, acting like nothing had happened all day. 

But the thought that his body might still smell like another woman made me sick. 

I gripped the sheets, trying to keep myself together. 

But I couldn’t stop myself from biting down on his shoulder. 

I was too overwhelmed. I needed to let something out–or I was going to lose my mind. 

Dorian Thorne winced. “Baby, what’s wrong?” 

Not until I tasted blood–werewolf blood is thicker than human blood, with a weird mix of iron and moonlight–did I 

let go. 

He sat up and looked at me—my face was completely pale. He looked heartbroken. “What is *wrong* with you?” 

“Lately, you’ve been acting so strange. I can’t put my finger 

on it.” 

“Did something happen? Tell me. Please.” 

I looked at his disgusting face and tried to calm down. 

“Nothing. Just… pre–wedding stress. I’m scared something will go wrong.” 

He pulled me back down and held me close, his low, soft voice 

warm in my ear: “Whatever happens, I’m right here with you. 

Seeing you hurt like this… it kills me.” 

I didn’t say anything. 

He kept talking. “Baby… what do you think our life will be like after we get married?” 

“I don’t know.” 

Because we’re not getting married. 

He laughed softly. “I used to dream about having a future with you.” 

So once you got it, you stopped appreciating it, huh? 

“I want to see you in the kitchen wearing an apron, making breakfast–the morning sun on your face. I bet you’d look so beautiful.” 

“I want you to have two kids. One who looks like you, one who looks like me. Our little loves. They’d be adorable–little wolves are always so wild.” 

“I want to see you in every ordinary moment of every ordinary day.” 

“Baby, you asked if I would run away from our wedding. Why would I? I want to spend my whole life with you. After all, I’m the one who caught you.” 

Dorian Thorne… don’t act so well that you even fool yourself. 

Three days before the wedding. 

I never expected the girl–Tatum Reed–to come find me. 

The moment I saw her, I remembered who she was. 

She was one of the girls the Thorne family had sponsored–the 

Thornes had a scholarship program for human students from low–income families. Tatum had been in one of the first 

groups. She’d worked hard and made it from some tiny town to the big city. 

And somewhere along the way, she’d given her heart to Dorian 

Thorne. 

I guess it made sense. A girl at that impressionable age meets a handsome, rich, untouchable man. And that man pulls her out of poverty and gives her a future. Who wouldn’t fall for him? 

“Evelyn… you liked someone else for ten years. But I’ve only ever liked Dorian Thorne for ten years. So Evelyn… stop hogging him, okay?” 

She smiled at me sweetly, but there was no warmth in it. 

“You’ve seen my posts, haven’t you?” 

She knew I’d seen her social media. 

So she smiled wider. “So you know we’ve kissed. That we’ve slept together. That we just *get* each other, two people who 

loved from the shadows.” 

“Dorian and I make more sense together, don’t you think?” 

It felt like there was a rock sitting on my chest, crushing the air out of me. 

But she wasn’t done. “Women always choose the guy who loves them more when they get married.” 

“Do you really think he believed that you could love someone else for ten years and then just… fall for him like that? You’ve only been together for five.” 

Dorian Thorne had told her all of this. 

And it was true–after I stopped chasing Cassian Greymoor, I stayed friends with Dorian Thorne for two years. I didn’t let myself feel anything until I was sure. We’d been together for 

three. 

I looked down and laughed softly. 

“If you were really so sure he was going to end up with you… you wouldn’t be here talking to me right now.” 

Tatum’s face went pale, but she fired back fast: “It’s only a matter of time. Just like you. You spent years pining after someone else eventually he’ll see that the girl who loves him 

from the shadows is worth his time.” 

“Because he’ll see himself in me. He’ll pity me. He’ll be 

curious about me. And as long as he’s curious, I can win.” 

“You just don’t get it–you’ve always been the one on top.” 

My nails pressed crescents into my palms. 

Thinking of Dorian Thorne made my heart feel like someone was squeezing it—this sharp, stabbing kind of pain. 

I swallowed down the taste of blood rising in my throat and stood up, looking at her one word at a time. 

“Don’t worry, Tatum–the one you can’t have is always the 

one you want most.” 

“You’d better hold on tight to that ‘girl in the shadows‘ 

position.” 

“Because once you actually get what you want… your perfect 

white moonlight turns into a dried–up grain of rice. Your 

red–velvet heartthrob turns into a smear of mosquito blood on 

the wall.”
