The Only Color Left In His World Was Another Woman Chapter 05

Julian stared at the string of rejected calls on his

phone. His expression grew increasingly irritated.

He opened his messages and pulled up our

conversation.

His first messages were nothing but accusations.

Julian: [Tessa, you’ve had a real attitude lately.

Now you won’t even answer my calls?]

Julian: [We’re talking about some old climbing

gear and an outdated camera. Are you seriously

still making such a big deal out of it?]

Julian: [Fine. When we get back, I’ll take you

shopping for replacements.]

He kept our conversation open for a long time,

waiting for a reply that never came.

Despite himself, Julian began to feel uneasy.

In all the years we’d been together, I’d always

responded to his messages almost immediately,

no matter how busy I was.

Even when we were fighting and barely speaking,

I’d never been able to ignore him for more than ten

minutes.

But now, a full thirty minutes had passed.

For the first time, Julian had the unsettling feeling that something was slipping beyond his control.

He was about to call his assistant and have him

find out where I was when Brielle appeared, took

his arm, and began coaxing him in her usual sweet

voice.

“Julian, I was going through the climbing gear, but

I don’t understand half of it. Come show me what

everything’s for.”

Her hazel eyes sparkled as she smiled at him.

Julian was captivated by the colors he could see

in her face.

He couldn’t bring himself to refuse her.

“Okay,” he agreed.

Still, he glanced down at his phone again. There

was nothing new from me.

He pressed his lips together, locked the screen,

and tossed the phone onto the couch.

Brielle had decided she wanted to climb Mount

Norens on a whim. She didn’t know the first thing

about mountaineering.

She didn’t even understand the basics.

As far as she was concerned, if I could do it, there

was no reason she couldn’t.

She had no idea how dangerous altitude sickness

and hypothermia could be.

Her suitcase was packed with cute dresses and strappy tops that would look good in Instagram photos. She decided the emergency thermal blankets and portable oxygen canisters were taking up space she needed for more makeup, so she secretly removed them.

If Julian hadn’t caught her, they might not have made it halfway up the mountain, let alone reached the summit.

Brielle wasn’t happy about being stopped.

She sulked while Julian patiently explained why

those supplies were essential.

She pretended to agree.

But the moment his attention was elsewhere, she

took the supplies out again and hid them under

the couch.

Once they’d finished packing, they boarded a flight the following day for Vessera, a city famous for its

snowy landscapes.

They checked into the five–star Maravini Hotel, where they’d already made reservations.

Their plan was to spend three days getting used

to the local climate before attempting to climb

Mount Norens.

Five days had passed, and Julian still hadn’t

managed to reach me.

He couldn’t stand the uncertainty any longer.

He instructed his assistant to go to my apartment

and look for me.

His assistant got back to him shortly afterward.

Assistant: [Mr. Mercer, Ms. Rowan doesn’t live

there anymore. The landlord says she ended her lease a week ago.]

“…What?”

Julian was stunned.

I’d rented that apartment for nearly a decade. It

held countless precious memories of our time

together, right down to the smallest decorations.

we’d picked out ourselves.

Even after Julian had amassed a fortune and

bought several beautiful houses and spacious

luxury condos in my name, I couldn’t bear to leave

that apartment.

He knew how much the place meant to me.

And now I’d walked away from it without looking

back.

Only then did Julian finally understand.

I wasn’t throwing a tantrum or trying to compete

for his attention.

I really was leaving him.
