He Called Me His Mother’s Killer And Tried To Transfer Me To His Friend Chapter 07

Tessa suddenly turned on Grant and grabbed him.

“You said the house was yours alone! Your said it’d be ours after we got married!”

“How the hell did it end up in your sons‘ names?”

It was obvious Grant had lied to her.

He tried to calm her down, guilt all over his face.

“Don’t worry. I’ll get the house back.”

His reassurance only made her angrier.

“Grant! You lied to me! That’s marriage fraud!”

“You expect me to marry you with no house? What world are you living in?”

“No house, no marriage!”

“I’ve already been divorced once. I’m not afraid to do it again!”

She threatened to divorce him unless he got the house back.

Desperate to keep her from making a scene, Grant made another promise.

“I’ll get you the house. I swear, whatever it takes!”

I snorted. “You’d better start looking for a lawyer to fight me in court.”

Grant froze, disbelief in his eyes. He hadn’t expected me to take him to court.

The officer turned to me.

“Are you sure you want to pursue this matter to the fullest extent of the law? You’re not asking for

leniency?”

Grant hurried to plead his case.

“Mara, the boys are both in middle school now. Can’t you let this go for their sake?”

“I’ll pay the money back right away.”

“You always put the boys first. You don’t want people pointing fingers at them, calling their father a

criminal, do you?”

He was sure I’d cave if he brought up the boys. In his mind, I’d always put their future first.

And he wasn’t wrong about how I’d been in the past. I’d spent years putting Ethan and Noah first.

But this divorce broke my heart. They’d hurt me more than I ever thought possible.

No amount of good parenting could change the fact that they had their father’s genes.

I didn’t waver.

“Don’t say I haven’t thought about the boys. You’re the one who has to pay for this, not me!”

“If you really cared what your sons think of you, you wouldn’t have done this in the first place!”

I paused, then turned back to the officer.

“No leniency. I want this handled by the book.”

“I’ll have a lawyer contact you about the next steps.”

Grant panicked. He lowered his voice and tried to reason with me.

“Mara, after all these years, are you really going to do this to me?”

“Is this little thing really worth all this trouble? I said I’d pay you back. What more do you want?”

I sneered. “$150,000 is a little thing to you?”

“When we got married, lyou called me a heartless bitch for asking for that $80,000. You blamed me for

your mother’s death!”

“And you conveniently forgot what happened to that money. I gave every last dollar to your father for his

medical bills.”

“I even put $20,000 of my own money into it!”

“So when you asked for a divorce, I was hurt, but I wasn’t heartbroken.”

“The universe was giving me a chance to cut my losses.”

He hurried to defend himself.

“I was just drunk that night. I didn’t mean it!”

“If I’d really hated you, I wouldn’t have stayed with you all those years.”

“You can’t hold one drunken remark against me forever. Please, think about the boys!”

I stared at him, numb.

“You didn’t stay with me all those years because you wanted a life with me.”

“You stayed because Tessa was still married, the boys were little, and your sick father needed someone to Jook after him,”

“Now Tessa’s divorced, the boys are in middle school and can take care of themselves, and your father’s well enough to go back home.”

“You used me for everything I could give this family, all while blaming me for your mother’s death.”

“You started this, Grant. Don’t blame me for making you pay for every last bit of it!”

I’d hit a nerve. Grant looked guilty and fumbled for an excuse.

The officer spoke up, “Grant Halvorsen, you’re coming with us to cooperate with the investigation. The

bank’s already filed a report too.”

“I suggest you have your family find you a good lawyer, and fast.”
