He Called Me His Mother’s Killer And Tried To Transfer Me To His Friend Chapter 06

Grant was just about to grab Tessa’s hand and slink off when the police showed up.

“Who’s Mara Ellison?”

I stepped up.

“That’s me.”

Tessa smirked, clearly delighted. She was looking forward to watching me go down.

The officer asked, “Were you the one who called the police?”

“Yes. Someone charged $150,000 to my card without my permission. That’s a lot of money.”

“I want to file a report and have this investigated.”

Grant’s expression changed instantly. He forced himself to look calm and began explaining.

“Mara, I got so busy I forgot to tell you about this.”

“I charged the $150,000 to your card. While we were married, we racked up three to four hundred thousand

in debt.”

“I couldn’t cover it all myself, so I charged $150,000 to your card. I’ll take care of the rest.”

I stared at him, stunned at how easily he could lie without blinking.

“Grant, even now, you still think you can play me for a fool.”

He cut me off. To prove he was telling the truth, he pulled Deke forward and gave him a look.

“If you don’t believe me, ask Deke. I’ve borrowed hundreds of thousands from him over the years to cover

household expenses.”

Deke didn’t want to lose the money Grant had promised him, so he played along.

“That’s right. Grant still owes me all that money.”

“Now that you’re divorced, he needs to pay me back fast.”

Tessa chimed in, adding to the pressure.

“Grant’s being way too generous, if you ask me. Most couples split their debts when they divorce.”

“He’s only asking her for $150,000. He’s practically bending over backward to be fair.”

The three of them were perfectly in sync.

Caleb remained calm, his voice cool and steady.

“Even if we set aside whether the debt is real, there’s another issue.”

“If one spouse didn’t know about the debt and the money wasn’t used for the household, the other spouse

isn’t automatically on the hook for it.”

Grant’s face turned livid.

“This is a family matter! You have no business butting in!”

Caleb held up the marriage certificate.

“Mara’s my wife. So who’s the outsider here?”

Grant’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he glared at the marriage license in Caleb’s hand.

“What happened before we divorced has nothing to do with you!”

Caleb replied without missing a beat.

“Your business is none of mine. But anything involving Mará concerns me.”

Furious, Grant lunged forward as if he were about to throw a punch.

“That’s enough!” the officer barked. “Let her talk!”

I stayed calm and explained.

“Today, Grant and I were in line at the county clerk’s office to finalize the divorce. He stepped outside to

take a call.”

“He took so long that I went out to get him. That’s when I overheard Tessa demanding $300,000 in cash

from him, plus another $150,000 for a jewelry set.”

“He used an online cash advance service to charge $150,000 to my credit card. I only found out from a

text alert from my bank.”

“I called the bank right away and reported the charge as fraud. Then I called the police.”

Then I pulled the divorce agreement out of my bag and handed it to the officer.

“This is our divorce agreement. It clearly states we have no debts and no savings to divide.”

“The only property is the house, and we’ve agreed to put it in our sons‘ names.”

The officer took the agreement and looked it over.

I went on, “Grant made that call right outside the county clerk’s office.”

“There are security cameras out there. You can pull the footage.”
