He Brought His Assistant On Our Honeymoon And Gave Me A Separate Room Chapter 07

“Why didn’t anyone tell me? Who let him leave? He’s autistic! He can’t survive out there on his own!”

Adrian’s voice rose. The facility director frowned at his shouting.

“Ms. Bennett is his sister. She was authorized to sign him out. We had no grounds to stop he

Adrian stood motionless in the hallway. Claire had meant what she’d said. She wasn’t throwing a tantrum this time. She didn’t want him anymore.

“No!”

He clutched his head, the word coming out in a low roar. He wouldn’t let Claire disappear. He’d never imagined she would.

He scoured his contacts, her social media, anywhere she might have left a clue. Then he froze. He had no idea where to look for her.

For five years, she’d built her days around him. He’d never paid attention to who her friends were or where she liked to go.

He stood shaking, his phone clenched in his hand. After a long moment, he drove his fist into the wall. He was furious with himself for being such a terrible husband-and for realizing it only now.

Then his phone rang, insistent. It was Lily, her tone snide.

“Adrian, you need to get to the office. Martin from the project team and a few others are getting everyone to jump ship!”

“What?”

Martin Hayes was a veteran of the core project team. He’d been there since the company started. Why would he…?

The office was already half-empty by the time Adrian arrived.

“How could you let them leave?”

Lily folded her arms, her tone dismissive.

“No one’s irreplaceable. The company’s fine as long as we’re here. Those old-timers just think seniority makes them special.”

Adrian’s temple throbbed. He shoved her aside and went after Martin and the others. Lily stumbled, her lower back hitting the corner of a desk. She stared, stunned.

Adrian didn’t look back. When he caught up with the departing employees, he learned they were fed up with Lily throwing her weight around.

“Besides, even your wife’s not on your side anymore. Can you blame us for looking for something better?”

Adrian swallowed and caught the speaker by the arm.

“My wife?”

“Yeah. Didn’t she go to work for Nathan Brooks?”

He went still, staring blankly ahead. Lily had followed him at some point. She gave a cold laugh.

“I told you. She acts so innocent, always guilt-tripping you about everything she’s done for the family. You’re worried she’ll get hurt out on her own, and she’s out there cheating on you!”

“Shut up!”

His shout silenced everyone around them. They all stared at Lily with open amusement. She wasn’t used to being humiliated. Tears sprang to her eyes.

Adrian stood frozen, numb with shock.

When Adrian found me, Nathan and I were eating at a restaurant.

He stood beside our table, looking as though he hadn’t slept in days, his eyes fixed on me. His voice

was so hoarse I could barely tell whether he was demanding an answer or accusing me.

“Why did you cheat on me?”

Nathan put down his knife and fork and stood between us.

“Watch your mouth. Claire and I are working together.”

Adrian clenched his jaw and glared back at him.

“I’ll deal with you later.”

He grabbed my wrist hard enough that it felt as though he might haul me out of my chair.

“Come home with me.”

My wrist hurt, but I didn’t budge. I kept cutting my steak, the knife scraping sharply against the

plate.

“Sign the divorce agreement, Adrian. What I do is none of your business anymore.”

His fingers went rigid. I pulled my hand free, dabbed the corner of my mouth with my napkin, and stood, glancing at Nathan.

“I’m finished.”

Nathan stayed close, shielding me as he led me out of the restaurant. Behind us, Adrian stood

frozen, his hand still outstretched.

Nathan arranged a bodyguard for me that day. He also increased the staff looking after Evan at the

support center. I frowned and told him it was too much. He leaned against the car and smiled.

“When you’ve got someone with your talent, you look after them. Don’t feel like you owe me.”

He seemed to read my mind.

“I’m not running a charity. Your proposal just landed us a major project. You made me money.

You’ve earned this.”
