My Sister Popped The Bubble Of My Happy Marriage Chapter 06

When the plane landed in Boston, it was raining outside.

I didn’t turn on my phone. I dragged my suitcase into a hotel near the airport. The front desk asked how long

I planned to stay.

“A month for now.”

Back in Manhattan, Dante brought Serafina back to the Rinaldi Townhouse on the Upper East Side. She held

the clothes she had just packed and stopped at the guest room door.

“Celeste might still be angry. I’ll just stay in the guest room.”

“This is my house. You don’t need to watch anyone’s face.”

Dante said it, then noticed how quiet the house was.

There was no dinner on the table. My usual shoes were missing from the entryway. My suitcase was gone

from the bedroom.

He took out his phone and texted me.

[Where are you?]

No reply.

He frowned, certain I was using leaving to force him to compromise.

“She won’t last long.”

Serafina didn’t answer. Her eyes landed on the coffee table.

My wedding ring sat on top of the divorce papers. Next to them was the statement of severance.

Dante glanced at it and sneered. “This again.”

My parents and Matteo showed up soon after.

Matteo flipped through the divorce papers, full of contempt.

“Where could she go? When she runs out of money, she’ll come crawling back.”

Father only cared about one thing.

“Did she sign the guarantee for Matteo’s company?”

No one answered.

Serafina bent down to tidy the papers on the table. A hospital record slid out from the pile.

She read it, and her face went white.

Dante snatched it from her.

The procedure name, the date, and my name were printed clearly on the page. Elective termination of pregnancy. The date was yesterday.

“Impossible.”

He clutched the record and stormed into the nursery. The new crib was still unopened. The star wallpaper he had picked out himself was still on the wall. A few days ago, he had been standing in this room planning our life after the baby came.

Now there was nothing left but an unfinished nursery.

Mother followed him in. She saw the surgery record and blurted out, “How dare she terminate a pregnancy without permission?”

Matteo’s face darkened too. “She got rid of her own baby just to make a point?”

Serafina covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

“It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t moved in, Celeste wouldn’t have done this.”

Dante didn’t comfort her the way he usually did. He stood in front of the crib and called my number over and over. From demands at first, to softening his tone, saying the marriage could be renegotiated. All he got was a cold voicemail message every time.

The surgery record slipped from his hand and flipped to the back. A nurse had written a line there.

Patient was unaccompanied after surgery. Left the hospital alone.

Dante stared at those words and didn’t move for a long time.

Only then did he learn that from the moment I found out I was pregnant to the moment I ended it, I hadn’t had a single family member by my side. And he didn’t even know which hospital I had gone to.
