My Sister Popped The Bubble Of My Happy Marriage Chapter 04

Dante shoved me aside and put Serafina behind him.

My waist slammed into the corner of the table. I saw black from the pain. He didn’t even look at me. He only checked Serafina. “Serafina, are you hurt?”

She shook her head, but tears were falling. “It’s my fault. Dante, let’s stop lying to her.”

I couldn’t help laughing. “Finally ready to admit it?”

I looked at her. “For two years, I’ve been chasing down every lead on you like a lunatic. I even started wondering if something was wrong with me. Do you think any of this is funny?”

Serafina was crying so hard she could barely stand.

Dante immediately held her and turned to yell at me. “Enough! She was afraid you couldn’t handle it, so she kept it from you!”

Mother stepped in front of Serafina too.

“We did it for your own good!”

I froze.

Father spoke, his face dark.

“We knew six months ago. Your sister has been cleaning up your mess. People on the Rinaldi side were starting to notice. We kept it quiet so it wouldn’t affect business between the families.”

So they hadn’t just known about Dante’s affair. They had treated covering it up as protecting the family’s interests. Every time I got close to evidence, Serafina tipped off our parents, and they and Matteo covered for the two of them.

Matteo leaned back on the couch and spoke with irritation.

“Now that it’s all out, stop playing the victim. Dante liked Serafina back in college.”

I looked at Dante. He didn’t deny it.

So they had feelings for each other since college. Back then, I was the one the family overlooked, and I treated Dante as the only hope of getting me out of the Santoro house.

Serafina said she couldn’t bear to watch me fall apart, so she stepped aside. She let me marry Dante and become Mrs. Rinaldi.

But all she gave up was the title of wife.

After the wedding, she was still tangled up with Dante, and the whole family lied to me for two years.

Mother held Serafina’s hand, as if Serafina were the one who had been wronged.

“Serafina has already given up enough for you. She didn’t fight you for the position of Mrs. Rinaldi. Now she just wants to keep the man she loves. Why do you have to hunt her down?”

My eyes dropped to my belly. “I won’t divorce for now. And the baby stays.”

I looked at him. “And Serafina?”

He didn’t hesitate. “I will not give her up again.”

Father said in a low voice, “This ends here. As long as you two don’t drag this outside, Rinaldi and Santoro can keep working together. You stay Mrs. Rinaldi. Serafina doesn’t have to hide anymore.”

Matteo laughed.

“The position of Mrs. Rinaldi, the Rinaldi family resources, and the baby in your belly. Which one didn’t Serafina give up for you? She’s backed off this far. How much more do you want?”

Serafina suddenly clutched her chest, sobbing so hard she couldn’t breathe. Everyone rushed to her.

Dante picked her up and headed for the door. As he passed me, he stopped and threw one last line over his shoulder, cold as ice.

“Take care of the baby. And stop using it to hurt Serafina.”

The door slammed shut in front of me.

I stood there for a long time before bending down to pick up the test results from the floor. My name was printed clearly on it, along with the results for the child I hadn’t given birth to yet. Congenital heart defect. Termination recommended.

I had thought this baby might make Dante remember he was a husband. Might give me a home that was truly mine.

Now I had no illusions left.

I picked up my bag and went alone to a different private hospital.

When I signed the surgery consent form, the nurse asked if I had any family with me. I shook my head.

My phone lit up. A message from Dante.

[Serafina is awake now.]

Then another.

[The child is the Rinaldi heir. Behave yourself and stop making everyone worry about you.]

I stared at the screen, then turned off my phone.

When I woke up, the nurse handed me the procedure record.

“The surgery went smoothly. Rest today.”

I took the file and said quietly, “Thank you.”
