The Stupid Wife’s Last Stand Chapter 04

The Stupid Wife’s Last Stand Chapter 04

Dante rushed in and looked at me with disappointment written all over his face.

“Autumn, what have you done?”

He did not wait to hear my side. He simply scooped Mia into his arms, carrying her downstairs.

The vile moans from that video still echoed in my ears.

I stared at the photo on the nightstand until my eyes burned. Then my phone buzzed.

It was a message from my mother.

Mom: [The ticket is booked. I’ll wait for you at the airport.]

I rubbed my eyes and began packing.

The doctor arrived soon after. By the time I dragged my suitcase downstairs, they had finished their examination of Mia.

The moment Dante saw my luggage, his temper flared into a full-blown rage.

“So you were serious?” he snapped. “You’re leaving?”

He grabbed my arm hard. “Fine. If you want to leave, I’ll drop you off myself.”

I could not break free. He forced me into the car.

“You used to be just stupid,” he said. “Now you’re stupid and cruel.”

I cried and struggled the whole time.

At one point, he caught my wrist again, and his expression softened a little.

“Autumn, do you have any idea how much pressure I took on when I married you?”

“My father still won’t shut up about it. This child is a means to an end. Give me a few months. Once the baby is born, everything will go back to normal.”

For a moment, his eyes held the same sincerity they used to.

But my stomach turned.

The love had been real.

So had the betrayal.

I yanked my hand away.

I couldn’t stand the thought of his skin on mine.

Dante’s face darkened. He stared at me, then slammed his foot down on the gas.

“Fine,” he shouted. “Have it your way.”

“Until the child is born, you’ll stay at the mountain lodge. You Dante’t come back without my permission.”

The car fell silent except for the sound of my ragged weeping.

Halfway there, his phone rang.

“Dante, where are you?” Mia’s voice shook through the speaker. “My father… he’s at the gate.”

Dante frowned. “What? That’s a gated community.”

“Please hurry. He’s trying to get in. The doctor left, and I’m alone. I’m terrified for the baby.”

Dante slammed on the brakes and looked at me.

“You did this?”

I said nothing.

That only made him more certain.

“It was you. It had to be you. You’re the only one who knows him. You’re the only one who could have gotten him in.”

I let out a breath. “I didn’t. Why would I do that?”

His mouth curved into a wicked smile.

“For yourself. You’re selfish enough to do anything. No wonder you stopped fighting when I tried to take you away.”

Before I could struggle, he dragged me out of the car.

“Get out.”

Outside, the road was pitch-black.

We had not reached the lodge. We were still miles from the city. The howling wind threatened to knock me over.

Dante did not care.

He had to get back to Mia.

He shoved my suitcase out after me, then the tires screamed against the road as he drove away.

The wind took the last of my tears with it.

I called my mother.

“Mom,” I said, “a bad man left me on the side of the road. Can you come get me?”
