My Wife Sent Me to a Psych Ward, So I Gave Her a Big Surprise Chapter 09

She pulled a plastic bag from inside her coat. Inside was a bar exam preparation book soaked through by the

rain.

It was the same book I had bought for her with my first scholarship money and the wages I earned from

working part–time.

On the cover was the message I had written years ago:

“To my beloved Wren. I hope we both become better and better.”

She held the ruined book out to me.

“Sylvan, do you remember this book?”

“Back then, we were so broke I could barely afford to eat. You worked two jobs every day just to make sure I

had food and everything I needed.”

“I told you I’d buy you a big house someday. I told you we’d open our own law firm together.”

“Can we start over? I’ll give you everything I own. I’ll do whatever you ask.”

She broke down crying.

I looked at the ruined book in her hands, then snatched it from her.

Right in front of her, I tore it into pieces.

The shredded pages mixed with the rain and fell into the muddy water.

Wren’s eyes widened.

She reached out, trying to pick them up.

I stepped on the scraps and crushed them into the mud.

“Wren, don’t you think it’s ironic that you’re bringing this up now?”

“When you skipped my father’s trial hearing to save that other man, did you ever think about the promises we

made?”

“When you had me locked inside that private psychiatric facility, did you ever think about the days I worked

two jobs just to support you?”

She covered her face, trembling.

“I didn’t know they would hurt you this badly… I really didn’t know.”

“I only wanted you to stay quiet for a few days. I didn’t want you going to the bar association. I never wanted

you pushed this far.”

“Stay quiet?”

I looked at her coldly.

Then I kicked her hard in the chest.

She cried out and fell into the muddy water.

“Do you know what those drugs felt like when they entered my veins? It felt like something was crawling under my skin. I couldn’t even form a sentence.”

“Every day in that dark room, they strapped me to a bed. I had to relieve myself right there. They drugged me

like I was some stray animal, and I didn’t even have the right to die.”

“When I was shaking on that electric shock table, what were you doing?”

“You were with Auden, trying on your custom tailored suit and preparing to accept your award.”

Wren lay in the mud, trembling so badly that she couldn’t even form a complete sentence.

“Wren, you don’t regret hurting me.”

“You regret losing.”

“You regret betting everything on Auden and finding out he was worthless. You regret losing the status you

were so proud of.”

“A selfish woman like you doesn’t get to talk about love.”

I turned around and walked away.

I couldn’t stand looking at her anymore.

Behind me, she let out a desperate scream.

“Sylvan! Just kill me! Let me be with your father… Please!”
