My Wife Sent Me to a Psych Ward, So I Gave Her a Big Surprise Chapter 02

The car stopped in front of the mansion.

Auden’s sports car was parked in our private parking space.

He leaned against the car door and waved at Wren.

“Wren, you’re finally back. I’ve gone through my defense brief so many times, but something still feels wrong.”

He completely ignored me.

Instead, he walked right up to Wren and practically glued himself to her side.

Wren glanced at me.

Her look warned me not to make a scene.

“Sylvan, go inside first. I’ll take a look at Auden’s case.”

I looked at them coldly.

“Just don’t do anything on my couch. I’d hate for it to get dirty.”

With that, I turned around and walked away.

Wren stood there, staring at my back.

She couldn’t understand how the man who once lost sleep over every little thing that happened to her had become someone who looked at her with nothing but cold indifference.

Back when we were in law school, Wren was the star of the debate team.

She was confident, ambitious, and always stood in the spotlight.

I used my first scholarship payment and the money from my part-time job to buy her an expensive set of bar exam preparation books.

For her, I gave up the opportunity to study abroad.

I put aside my own plans and took care of everything for her, watching her grow from a junior attorney into a successful lawyer.

But later…

She became a celebrated star attorney.

And Auden appeared by her side.

She told me:

“Mrs. Vale changed my life. She gave me a chance when no one else did.”

“Auden is like a younger brother to me. I have to look after him.”

I asked her once:

“Would your real brother drink from your cup like that? Would he sit in the passenger seat of your car just to provoke me?”

But she only looked at me and said:

“Can you stop being so narrow-minded? Can’t you show a little grace?”

“Do you have any idea how unreasonable you sound?”

That was when I realized…

Those five years I gave her had all been wasted.

Over the past few days, I forced myself to let go of every expectation I still had for her.

Every day, I cooked meals on time.

I watched her come home after midnight, or not come home at all.

And I didn’t even bother looking up anymore.

Three days before the trial began.

I placed all the organized case files on Wren’s desk.

“Everything you need is here. I already had my father’s medication delivered through the court officer.”

“The trial starts at nine the day after tomorrow. Don’t be late.”

Wren flipped through the case files.

“I’ve got this case under control. Unless something unexpected happens, I should be able to get an acquittal at trial.”

For the first time in a long while, I felt a little relief.

“Thank you.”

She looked up at me.

“That’s it? Sylvan, we’re legally married. Why do you always give me that attitude?”

I looked at her without any expression.

“So you want me to smile? Fine.”

I forced a smile.

“Happy now?”

Wren immediately grew irritated.

She slammed the case files onto the desk.

“You’re unbelievable!”

She stormed out and didn’t come back all night.

I didn’t care.

As long as my father could walk free, this marriage that existed only on paper could end at any time.

The day the trial began, heavy rain poured from the sky.

I arrived at Grayhaven Superior Court early and sat in the first row of the gallery.

When my father was brought out by the court officer, he looked weak.

He looked ten years older.

When he saw me, he forced himself to give me a reassuring smile.

I stared at the empty seat reserved for the defendant’s attorney.

Ten minutes remained before the trial began.

But Wren still hadn’t arrived.
