My Best Friend Changed Boyfriends Weekly… Until She Chose My Ten-Year Fiancé Chapter 05

The front door slammed shut.

The house stayed quiet for a long while.

Damon stared hard at the doorway, already planning to make Lindsay apologize when she came slinking

back.

He’d freeze her out for a while too. Teach her a lesson about that temper of hers.

But minute by minute passed, and nothing moved at the door.

Chloe tugged at his sleeve.

“Damon, maybe you should go coax Lindsay back?”

“I’m fine.” She lowered her eyes and dabbed at the corners of her eyes. “You two are the ones getting married,

after all.”

Her voice was soft, dripping with hurt.

Damon snapped out of it, an inexplicable irritation rising in his chest.

“Why should I go after her?”

“She’s so proud. Fine, let her just not show up tomorrow, then.”

Mrs. Hale’s anger had cooled along with that slap.

“Lindsay’s temper keeps getting worse. But don’t worry, Damon. I know my daughter. She’s just saying things

in anger.”

“She’ll be there tomorrow, I’m sure of it.”

Mr. Hale let out a cold snort.

“Damon, if you ask me, show up late tomorrow. Give her a taste of waiting.”

“She’s about to get married and she’s still this willful.”

Damon’s brow furrowed slightly, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes.

Seeing that, Chloe looked troubled.

“Isn’t that too harsh? Lindsay loves Damon so much. She must be so anxious by now.”

He thought about the last ten years with Lindsay, every little moment.

The way her eyes filled with tears and she nodded desperately when he brought up marriage.

The last trace of hesitation in Damon’s eyes vanished.

“Mr. Hale’s right. Let her wait.”

He took Chloe’s hand. “I’m sorry you had to deal with this, Chloe.”

“She knew it was your birthday today, and she still made a scene and ruined it for you. And you’re still

defending her.”

Chloe lowered her head and sighed helplessly.

“She’s my best friend. What else can I do?”

Mrs. Hale carried out a table full of dishes from the kitchen.

“Forget about her. Let’s eat. Today is Chloe’s birthday, and Chloe’s happiness is all that matters.”

That night.

Damon checked his phone every few minutes.

His chat with Lindsay stayed silent.

In every fight before, Lindsay had always been the first to give in.

Unease crept into his chest. He held his phone and typed, deleted, typed again.

Chloe snuck up behind him and smeared a dab of birthday cake frosting on the tip of his nose.

Damon’s eyes lit up. He called out, “Lindsay-”

But when he turned around, he realized Lindsay hadn’t come back at all.

Chloe’s eyes instantly welled up.

“Damon… I know you love Lindsay very much. But the week isn’t over yet. You’re still my boyfriend.”

Damon’s heart ached at once.

He turned and pulled Chloe into his arms.

Chloe was thin, but full on top, and she’d deliberately worn something thin.

Pressed against his chest through the fabric, it was hard for Damon not to react.

Lindsay’s parents had long since gone to bed.

Chloe’s voice whispered close to his ear.

“Damon, it’s our last night. Are you sure you want to spend it thinking about her?”

The next second, Damon lifted her in his arms and carried her to her room.

The next day, Damon didn’t wake until noon.

He still had an hour until the time he and Lindsay had agreed to get their license.

If he hurried, he’d make it just in time.

He shot out of bed and threw on his clothes.

But Chloe grabbed him.

“Damon, it’s still early. Why don’t you eat something before you go?”

As she spoke, she glanced at the time.

“Oh? It’s already so late. If you’re late, Lindsay will be upset again.”

Damon’s hand froze on his tie.

Remembering how he’d planned to make Lindsay wait, he slowed down.

When he walked out of the room, Mr. Hale was watching the news.

He glanced at the clock.

“Damon, no rush. Eat first, then go.”

Damon nodded.

At the table, he kept picking up his phone and checking it. Still nothing from Lindsay.

An uneasy feeling he couldn’t place settled in his stomach.

Mrs. Hale hesitated. “Maybe you should just go first? Lindsay’s been waiting over an hour. That’s enough.”

Damon was about to stand up when he saw Chloe still drinking her soup.

“No rush. Let Chloe finish eating first.”

By the time they reached the County Clerk’s Marriage License Office, it was three hours past the time he and

Lindsay had agreed on.

Damon walked into the lobby and searched for her everywhere.

But Lindsay wasn’t there.

Chloe sounded guilty. “Did Lindsay get tired of waiting and leave? It’s all my fault. If only I’d eaten faster.”

Damon patted her shoulder. “It’s not your fault. It’s her problem.”

Mrs. Hale complained too. “Where did that girl run off to? She couldn’t even say a word.”

“Maybe she missed her slot and rebooked?”

“Damon, go ask.”

Damon nodded and hurried to the counter.

The clerk checked several times.

“There’s no appointment under a Lindsay Hale today.”

“She did have an appointment on file. But she canceled it a week ago.”
