My Best Friend Changed Boyfriends Weekly… Until She Chose My Ten-Year Fiancé Chapter 03

The next day, when Chloe was discharged, they passed by my hospital room.

Damon glanced inside.

His steps slowed.

“Damon, what’s wrong?”

He shook his head. “Nothing. The girl in there just looked a little like Lindsay.”

She stood on her toes and pecked him. “It’s only been two days and you’re already missing Lindsay? Not allowed!”

Damon wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her back deeply.

“No way. I told you, this whole week belongs to you.”

During the days I was hospitalized, Chloe texted me constantly.

[Day one of vetting my best friend’s fiancé — his cooking passed!]

The photo showed a table full of mouthwatering dishes.

In the ten years I’d been with Damon, he’d never once cooked for me.

He said it was because he’d been sent away to school as a kid and had lived with relatives.

To keep from being looked down on, he’d taught himself to cook.

He was so small he had to stand on a stool to reach the spatula. That was why he came to hate cooking so much.

I’d felt so sorry for him that I never let him step foot in the kitchen.

Turns out he wasn’t unwilling to cook. He just didn’t want to cook for me.

[Day two of the vetting — dragged him out at midnight to see the sunrise. Temper passed!]

In the photo, Damon — who never liked exercise — wore a matching athletic jacket with Chloe and grinned at the camera, flashing a peace sign from a mountaintop.

A second later, my mother updated her feed.

It was a photo of Chloe and Damon kissing under the sunrise.

[Day three of the vetting — guess what we’re doing?]

[I’m picking out wedding gowns with Damon! Tell me, whose taste is better, his or mine?]

She sent me photos of two gowns, both pure white, displayed on mannequins.

I opened my mother’s feed with practiced ease.

One minute ago, she’d posted: [My honorary daughter looks so beautiful. I wonder who’ll be lucky enough to marry her.]

In the photo, Chloe was wearing the gown, with Damon in the matching tuxedo, her hand on his arm.

They stood close together, leaning into each other, looking at the camera.

Behind them, a huge floor-length mirror.

It reflected my parents’ smiles, their eyes wet — more moved than they’d been when Damon proposed to me.

My phone buzzed.

[Lindsay, Damon and I both agreed this one’s prettier!]

The one she meant was the gown she’d just been wearing.

I’m very thin on top. A strapless cut didn’t suit me at all.

It only suited her.

I still didn’t reply.

Damon unblocked me.

[Why aren’t you answering Chloe? That gown was pretty. I went ahead and ordered it.]

I didn’t answer him. I just liked my mother’s latest post.

Two minutes later, my mother texted me.

[Lindsay, you’re coming back the day after tomorrow, right?]

[It’ll be just in time for Chloe’s birthday.]

[Listen to your mother. You can’t give Damon anything new. Better he has Chloe than get led astray by some random woman.]

I stared at those words.

I’d thought I was numb by now, but my chest still ached dully.

Broken ribs could heal. Some wounds couldn’t.
