He Gave His Assistant My Promotion, So I Left Him Forever Chapter 09

The years away were good to me.

I threw myself into the work. The years I’d spent in the corporate world gave me an edge, and it showed. My grades stayed near the top, and my advisor took notice.

That’s also where I met Julian Carver.

A couple years younger than me and already the guy everyone on campus seemed to know.

Good family, sharp mind, easy smile. He didn’t exactly struggle for attention.

We got paired on a research project.

He liked what he saw. And he didn’t hide it.

Late nights in the lab, he’d show up with coffee. When I got sick, he was at my door with

medicine and soup.

If I hit a wall with my research, he’d sit with me for hours, working through it until something

clicked.

On free afternoons, he’d talk me into walks, bookshops, museums.

Everything about him was upfront. No games, no angles.

Half the department was already shipping us.

But I kept a line between us.

“Julian, I really appreciate you. But I’m not looking for anything right now. I just want to focus

on school.”

He just smiled.

“No rush. Whenever youre ready, I’ll be right here.”

And he meant it. He kept showing up, kept being kind, and never once made me feel like I owed him anything..

Three years went by faster than I expected. Suddenly, it was graduation.

Graduation day broke clear and warm.

The quad was packed with caps and gowns, everyone buzzing with that last-day energy.

I stood in my master’s gown, somewhere in the middle of it all, and for the first time in a long time, the smile on my face wasn’t costing me anything.

I had my degree. I had offers from companies I actually wanted to work for. The only decision

left was which one to pick.

I’d finally become the person I’d been trying to reach for ten years.

A gap opened in the crowd, and there he was.

Adrian.

He looked different. The suit was sharp, but it wasn’t the clothes. The restless edge was gone. He carried himself like someone who’d been broken down and rebuilt from the ground up.

He stopped in front of me. “Congratulations, Elena.”

He’d kept coming over the past three years. Always at a distance. Sometimes close enough for a few words, but never pushing. Never asking for more.

I nodded.

“Thanks.”

He held my gaze.

“I got the company back. Majority shareholder now.”

“Camille got hit with a lawsuit for the data theft. She’s blacklisted across the industry. She’s

done.”

He laid it all out, steady and factual, like a progress report he’d been rehearsing on the flight

over.

I listened. Nodded in the right places. Felt nothing.

That part of my life was a closed file.

Something flickered behind his eyes. He pushed past it.

“Elena, it’s been three years. I know you’ve moved on. But I haven’t.”

“Is there any chance we could… try again?”

Three years of silence on the subject, and there it was.

Before I could answer, a voice cut in.

“Hey, Mr. Bennett? I’ve been in line longer. You don’t get to cut.”

Julian appeared at my side, grinning, relaxed, like he’d been waiting for this exact moment.

The smile he gave Adrian was friendly. The look in his eyes was not.

Adrian’s jaw set. He didn’t flinch.

“I’ve known Elena for ten years. You don’t have that.”

“Ten years doesn’t mean much if you spent half of them hurting her. What matters is who

actually shows up.”

Neither of them looked away. The air between them could have snapped.

A few classmates had stopped to watch, nudging each other.

I looked at the two of them and almost laughed.

I turned away, took the camera someone was holding out, and called over my shoulder.

“Enough. We’re taking group photos. Come on.”

I walked into the crowd of gowns and caps, found my people, and smiled at the lens.

The sun was warm on my face.

And for the first time in years, I wasn’t looking back.

Behind me,

Adrian and Julian both went quiet. Whatever contest they’d been running, my

walking away ended it.

They caught up to me at the same time. Spoke at the same time.

“Let me get some solo shots of you. I’ve got a good eye.”

“Move. I brought an actual camera. They’ll turn out better.”

They were already bickering again.

I watched them and shook my head, still smiling.

I smoothed the front of my gown and let the noise of the quad wash over me. Something in my

chest felt quiet. Settled.

The old wounds had scarred over. There was still so much ahead.

I had my degree, my choices, and something I’d almost forgotten how to do. I liked who I was again.

Adrian and Julian? They were part of the story. But the story was mine.

No more standing in the rain, waiting for someone to share their umbrella.

I had my own.
