In A Wheelchair, They Still Can Only Look Up to Me Chapter 07

In A Wheelchair, They Still Can Only Look Up to Me Chapter 07

The first thing I did after waking up was ask the

staff to reject every single visitation request from

the Vale family. The Agent asked me, “Really? Not

even a single visit?”

I watched the snow falling outside the window

and gave a small nod.

I’d spent nineteen years waiting for them to

choose me. And it took just one surgery to see

clearly that they could take that choice back at

any moment.

So there was no point in seeing them again.

After a long course of treatment, I officially

entered the Northern Institute of Medical

Research.

My wolf had been severely damaged, and my body

could no longer handle physical training. So I

poured all the time I used to spend on skating and

cheerleading into medical research.

I started from the most basic cellular experiments,

studying infection control after bone marrow

transplants, the relationship between werewolf

self–healing abilities and nerve damage.

Sometimes I’d work through the entire night. The

institute was empty in the early hours, with only

the glow of the instruments keeping me company.

But I didn’t feel lonely.

At least data would never suddenly decide that my

pain was a lie just because someone else seemed

more fragile.

Researcher Kieran was on the same project team

as me.

He’d save me a cup of hot coffee, tap on my desk

when I lost track of time, and quietly stay with me.

through blizzard nights as we waited for the final

batch of results.

In the third winter, he held out a ring engraved with

cedar patterns and confessed to me.

“Isolde, I’m not doing this out of pity. I want to

choose you, every single day, for the rest of our

lives.”

Everyone in the lab held their breath.

I looked at that ring, and all I felt was a dull ache in

my chest.

“I’m sorry, Kieran.”

I pushed the ring back toward him.

“I’ve been hurt too deeply by being ‘chosen.‘ If being chosen only means you can be cast aside. someday, I’d rather never be chosen by anyone at

all.”

Kieran didn’t push. He simply put the ring away

and continued working alongside me as a

colleague.

Years passed. I led the team that cracked the

most stubborn infection problem in Pack bone

marrow transplants. The treatment protocol named after me was rolled out across all Packs in

the North, saving countless lives that would have been lost to post–surgical infections.

My identity was finally declassified after the

project ended.

The Federation decided to hold the highest

medical honor ceremony for me at Snowcrest

Hall.

On the day the news was announced, I received a

special request.

Garrick and Selene were no longer Alpha and Luna. They’d donated almost all of their remaining assets just to secure two spectator seats through

a charity auction.

The application had only one sentence on it,

[We don’t dare ask her to come home. We just

want to see with our own eyes what the child we

failed has become.]

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

Finally, I said to the Agent,

“Let them come.”
