In A Wheelchair, They Still Can Only Look Up to Me Chapter 05

In A Wheelchair, They Still Can Only Look Up to Me Chapter 05

“How could there be errors? All this data was perfectly fine before!” Garrick roared.

The Beta said urgently, “Sir, Isolde was the one who stayed up night after night putting together. all those core datasets for you! She handed every file over before she left, but the classification codes and logic are incredibly complex. Nobody’s been able to take on that workload since she’s

gone.”

Garrick’s entire body went rigid. He sank back into

his chair.

Right. Isolde. His pride, his Isolde. He’d always known how exceptional she was, he’d even thought about making her his successor.

But the Elders kept pushing back against the idea. They insisted only an Alpha’s biological child could inherit the title.

And then there were the people who’d sent Garrick all that “evidence” of Isolde abusing her authority.

Over the past year, Garrick had grown impatient

with her too.

He’d even started telling himself, maybe an

adopted child really could never measure up to a

blood–born one.

It wasn’t until this crisis hit that he realized just

how much he’d relied on Isolde. And what he’d

done to her lately!

“Where is the princess now?” the Beta asked

quickly.

“She…” Garrick thought of the handwritten letter,

and then that stranger’s call. The unease in his

chest swelled. “She’s gone. We have to find her.”

“I must bring my daughter back!”

The entire family mobilized in a frenzy, calling in every Pack contact and private investigator they could, scouring every medical center in Grayridge.

But Isolde had vanished from the territory

completely.

No purchase records. No medical records. No travel logs.

They finally came to a devastating realization.

That “classified confidential file” mentioned over

the phone, it was real.

A month later.

A black SUV bearing the special Pass Sigil of the Northern Federation pulled up at the gates of the

Vale estate.

The whole family rushed to the entrance, barely

even bothering with their shoes, convinced that they’d finally have news of Isolde.

But the ones who stepped out weren’t Isolde. They were two federal Agents.

The Agents walked into the living room without a single wasted word and slapped two sealed evidence bags onto the coffee table.

“You’ve been looking for Isolde, haven’t you?”

“Take a look.”

Selene’s hands trembled as she unsealed the first bag.

Inside, a soaked, bloodstained piece of clothing,

cut to shreds.

“What… what is this?”

Selene collapsed to the floor in terror, her lips.

quivering.

The Agent stared at them with cold, unfeeling

eyes.

“This is the bloodied clothing that was cut off

Isolde when she was lifted onto the operating

table for emergency treatment. The wound had

festered so badly that the fabric had fused with

her flesh and skin, they had to cut it off piece by

piece.”

Then the Agent tapped the tablet inside the

second bag.

A video from the ER body cam began to play.

The footage was brutal, raw and unflinching.

Isolde lay lifeless on the operating table.

When the doctor turned her over, the puncture

wound from the bone marrow extraction was laid

bare for the camera to see.

That wasn’t even a wound anymore. It was a

horrifying, festering mass of flesh.

“No, this isn’t real, my Isolde.”

Selene stared at the rotten flesh on the screen,

both hands clamped over her mouth as a ghastly,

retching sob tore out of her. For the first time, her

wolf let out a low, resentful growl, aimed straight

at her.

Garrick was trembling all over.

“Even if she got infected, we had the specialty anti–inflammatory at home! Orson left the medicine! Why didn’t she take them?”

The Agent let out a cold laugh and turned to look at Maelis, who was cowering in the corner,

shaking like a leaf.

“Pack physician Orson has been suspended and taken into custody. He confessed that Maelis paid him a hundred thousand dollars to play along with

her little act.”

“Maelis never had a low–grade fever at all. She was just jealous that you still had even a shred of

attention left for Isolde.”

“She deliberately said the medicine was too bitter and demanded those rose macarons from South Bay, just to get you out of the house so she could swap out Isolde’s medicine!”

“What? Isolde is your sister!” Garrick stared at

Maelis in utter disbelief.

Maelis dropped to her knees in terror.

“No, no, it wasn’t me, I never went through with it, it

was Evren!”

Evren rushed into the kitchen like a madman,

grabbed some tools, and dug deep into the pipes. He scraped out a layer of white powdery residue, not yet fully dissolved.

He collapsed into the filthy water on the floor, staring at the white powder in his hands. And he completely broke. His wolf let out a wail like it was dying.

The bottle of medicine he’d poured down the drain with his own hands, that had really been the only thing that could have saved his sister’s life.

He was the one who had washed away her last hope of survival.
