He Had Time for Everything but Me Chapter 06

No. More accurately, every trace of Claire had disappeared from the house.

Vanessa covered her nose. “Why does this place smell like disinfectant?”

Grant stood frozen.

Then he frantically searched every room.

“Claire! Claire!”

“Claire Bennett! Where are you hiding?”

He found nothing.

Everything that belonged to me was gone.

Even my scent was gone from the air.

“She even disinfected the place before she left.”

Grant forced himself to calm down and called me.

He made more than a dozen calls, but none went through.

He immediately called his assistant and ordered, “Find out where Claire went. Now!”

Annoyed by how concerned he was about me, Vanessa sat on the couch and sulked.

“What’s the big deal? Claire just moved out.”

“She’s always been dramatic. Of course she’s angry after finding out we got married. She’s probably hiding

somewhere nearby because she wants to watch you panic.”

Then she spotted the Al-generated fake marriage certificate on the coffee table and walked over, laughing.

“Grant, this fake certificate looks terrible. Claire didn’t even make a fuss over it.”

“There’s no way she would actually leave you.”

Grant stood in the empty living room with the phone’s disconnect tone ringing in his ears.

A short while later, his assistant called back.

“Mr. Holloway, I found her. Ms. Bennett boarded an international flight two hours ago.”

“She was headed to Scandinavia, but I couldn’t pinpoint the city. The assignment is highly confidential, so the details are restricted.”

Grant’s voice tightened with disbelief. “A corporate assignment? How is that possible? Wasn’t she fired?”

“I don’t know the details. All I found was that it’s a confidential ten-year overseas project. I’m afraid Ms.

Bennett may have already cut off contact with everyone…”

Grant’s hand tightened around his phone until his knuckles turned white.

He immediately called my parents and asked them both to try to reach me.

Then he called every friend I had in the area.

No one could reach me.

Vanessa pouted. “What confidential assignment? You know what Claire is like.”

“She’ll come back once she calms down. Last time you two fought, she pulled the same stunt and came

crawling back in less than five days.”

Grant ignored her and hurried to the bedroom I’d been using.

It was empty.

Only the bare bed remained.

Even the sheets were gone.

The jasmine-scented shampoo I always used, the pink towel that had hung in the bathroom, and the photo of

us on the nightstand had all disappeared.

I hadn’t even left any pantry staples in the kitchen.

The entire house had been wiped clean until not even the faintest trace of me remained.

Vanessa followed him and handed him the Al-generated fake marriage certificate.

“I’m the one who made this certificate, by the way. The Al did a terrible job blending the image. That face

barely even looks like her, but she believed it anyway. How pathetic.”

Grant stared at the certificate. Now it was almost painful to look at.

He suddenly remembered something and grabbed Vanessa by the wrist.

“Why did Claire go to the wedding?”

“The housekeeper was supposed to keep an eye on her. Nothing had gone wrong in years, so how did Claire find out about the wedding?”

“Did you tell her behind my back?”

Pain shot through Vanessa’s wrist as she struggled to pull free.

“Grant, you’re hurting me!”

“You know me. Why would I wait until the last minute to let Claire find out?”

“Besides, she’s my best friend. Why would I hurt her?”

For some reason, Grant found that ridiculous.

“You stole your best friend’s boyfriend. Since when do you care about hurting her?”

Grant turned and ran outside.

“Grant! Where are you going?” Vanessa chased after him.

“The airport!”

“But tonight is our wedding night!”

Grant didn’t stop.

“Tonight is nothing but a formality. In my heart, Claire is my

wife.”
