He Had Time for Everything but Me Chapter 04

Grant walked inside and frowned at the darkened house.

He didn’t turn on the lights.

“The doctor said you didn’t show up for your IVF appointment today.”

“You know my parents want a grandchild. Your parents said today that they want us to have a baby soon too. They want to enjoy their retirement as grandparents.”

“What happened with Vanessa was my fault. I should’ve told you, but I did it for your own good.”

He slowly came back into focus.

He gave me a concerned look, his voice softening. “Claire, I’m never going to fall in love with Vanessa.”

“Vanessa can’t carry a child, and my parents love children. I could never truly choose her. Next week, I’ll go with you to get our marriage license. I’ll wait however long it takes, okay?”

I had no tears or emotions left in me. Just numbness and silence.

“Okay.” I reached for him. “I don’t want IVF. You want a child, don’t you?”

“Then have one with me.”

The moment my fingers touched him, he pulled back almost imperceptibly.

My body stiffened for a second, but the last of my resistance drained away.

“You know I don’t like wasting time on things like that…”

Vanessa called him on video and sweetly urged him to hurry.

The room behind her was brightly lit and decked out in wedding decorations.

Meanwhile, I sat in a dark, silent room, lit only by the faint glow of his phone screen.

Grant smiled, nodded, and promised he would be there soon.

After he ended the call, the room went dark and silent again.

“Tomorrow, I’ll take you to your IVF appointment.”

My phone lit up with a termination notice from my company.

My supervisor explained that my boyfriend and biological parents had made false accusations about me and pressured the company to fire me.

I grabbed Grant’s hand, the pain I’d been holding back finally spilling out.

“Why did you make them fire me?”

“You knew how much this job meant to me! I’ve been at that startup since I graduated. I pulled all-nighters writing proposals and worked myself to the bone to land projects. I was supposed to be promoted next month, and you…”

Grant interrupted me in a gentle voice, “Claire, don’t blame me. This is the only way you can focus on having the baby.”

He jerked his hand free, his voice turning cold.

“I won’t allow you to work until you’ve had the baby.”

Something inside me finally died.

Two hours after he left, Vanessa sent me a photo.

She was beneath him, lost in pleasure.

Then she sent me a message.

Vanessa: [Sorry, Claire. Don’t blame Grant. I was the one who told him not to touch you.]

Vanessa: [His best quality is that he always does exactly what I say.]

But my heart was already shattered, and I felt nothing.

Thunder rolled outside.

I forced myself to keep going. I called for help and started moving out.

The home that had once felt warm was now empty and cold.

My supervisor sent me another message.

Supervisor: [Claire, you’ve been with this company since the beginning. I don’t believe you would ever do what they accused you of.]

Supervisor: [But the accusations have damaged your reputation, so I’d like to send you overseas on a confidential assignment to develop a new market. It would be a ten-year assignment. Are you willing to go?]

I didn’t hesitate.

Claire replied: [I am.]

I placed the AI-generated fake marriage certificate on the living room coffee table where it couldn’t be missed.

Then I sent Grant one final message.

Claire: [I wish you both happiness.]

I blocked Grant and Vanessa.

I blocked my biological parents too, threw away my SIM card, and boarded a flight that same night.

Since they all preferred Vanessa, I would let them have her.
