I Sent Away Every Woman He Loved Until I Became the One Who Left Chapter 12

Grant froze.

“Isn’t it because her parents died in front of her…”

“No. It’s because the night her parents died, she called you seven times, and you rejected every call. You were the trigger.”

Grant’s back went rigid. “What? The doctor never told me…”

“The doctor didn’t tell you? Then you do the math. What were you doing?”

“I…”

“You were at a spa weekend with Vanessa Reed, weren’t you?”

“By the time you got back the next morning, Merry’s mind had been tortured all night.”

“Back then, your business was just taking off. She thought one person sick was better than two. She’d rather be sick herself than make you feel guilty. She told us not to say anything.”

Jessica’s voice lost its edge, like she was tired. “And what did you do to her?”

The line went quiet for two seconds.

Jessica hung up.

Grant stood there with the phone in his hand for a long, long time.

By the time he got back to Brookhaven House, it was daylight.

The living room was crowded with people who’d come to watch the show.

“You’re back?” Buzz Cut sat up from the couch. “Everything okay? Where’s your wife? Still not back?”

Grant tossed his coat onto the armrest. “Shut up. All of you, get out.”

The men exchanged looks.

Someone dared to speak. “You know her condition. How far can she run?”

“She’ll find a hotel and hide for a couple days, waiting for you to come get her.”

her condition flares up, she’ll come back to you. You just sweet-talk her.”

“And Brittany. She just found out she’s pregnant and went to your wife. If you hadn’t rushed

over to keep her from getting upset, who knows what would’ve happened.”

Grant took the beer and drank

The shoulders he’d held tight all night slowly loosened.

That woman had signed the divorce agreement and sent it over, then vanished.

This was exactly the effect, she wanted.

“Let her be,” he set the bottle down, mouth curving slightly, though it wasn’t really a smile. “She can’t keep this up for two days.”

The men finally relaxed and laughed.

Then he added, “From now on, no one brings up the past in front of her.”

He put the bottle down. “When you see her, put in a good word for me. She’s softhearted. A

couple of nice words and she’ll forgive me.”

Tyler was about to answer when Grant lowered his head, as if talking to himself.

“This time I’ll let it go. I’ll come home for dinner more. Drink less.”

“The after-hours business socializing, I’ll cut what I can. Nothing matters more than family.

The room went silent.

Was this the same Grant who couldn’t stand being controlled by his wife?

Someone slapped a card on the table to break the tension. “Alright, old man. It’s still early. Let’s play a couple rounds.”

Grant didn’t answer. He pulled out his phone.

Meredith’s profile sat quietly there. No new messages.

He thought of something and dialed her doctor, Dr. Porter.

She picked up fast. “Hello?”

“Dr. Porter, has Merry contacted you?”

“Mr. Keller, you don’t know?” Dr. Porter’s voice came through, calm and unhurried. “Your wife has completed treatment and been discharged to rest. She should be home by now.”
