“She didn’t come?”

“No,” the manager scratched his head. “Since the house was delivered, no one’s ever stayed

here.”

Grant stood there.

The divorce agreement in his hand suddenly felt hot.

He quickly flipped to Meredith’s friend Jessica Whitmore’s number and called.

It rang three times before she picked up. “Hello?”

“Is Meredith at your place?”

There was a pause. “No. Grant, did you two fight again?”

Grant didn’t answer.

Jessica’s voice suddenly turned sharp.

“Is Merry missing?”

“Grant, I’m telling you, with her condition, can you stop bringing girls in front of her to provoke her?”

“I know men with money can’t keep it in their pants. I’m not going to lecture you. But can you at least consider her illness?”

“I was doing it for her,” Grant said, brow tight. “You think those women were really involved with me? I just wanted her to be independent. To stop clinging to me, living as my shadow. If I don’t provoke her, she’ll never get better.”

“For her? Provoke her?” Jessica’s voice rose. “Would you want that kind of provocation?”

“Those women showed up at her office every few days. Gifts and receipts shoved in her face. And then you brought a pregnant one. You call that helping her?”

“Grant, search your conscience. Are you still blaming her for what happened with the assistant?”
