In a run-down bar late at night, my childhood best friend Elena Rodriguez clutched a cheap craft beer, staring at me like I had gone insane.

I calmly took a bite of the pepperoni pizza I had brought myself and sighed in satisfaction. “Is five million not enough? Do I look like a money printer to you?”

Elena jabbed my forehead in frustration.

I pulled out my phone and shoved a presentation right in her face. “Look at this!”

She squinted and read aloud, “Mistpeak Wellness Ranch and Luxury Retreat Development Plan?”

Her head snapped up. “You’re moving to the countryside?”

“Wrong. I’m becoming a ranch owner!” I planted my foot on the plastic stool, full of ambition. “I’m done with the scheming and backstabbing in this city. Done with catering to rich egos. I’m going rural. A real farm. Free-range chickens, organic vegetables, air so clean you could bottle and sell it!”

“I’m going to make burned-out corporate workers pay top dollar to experience ‘slow living.’ Meditation, healing retreats, no cell signal. The full package!”

Elena stared at me, speechless. “Brittany… you can’t even keep a cactus alive. And you want to run a farm?”

I grinned smugly. “That’s where you’re wrong. I have money. I can hire professionals. That’s the power of outsourcing.”

Elena sighed and raised her glass. “Fine. Here’s to your future bankruptcy and your inevitable return to cling to me.”
