In the living room, Adrian and I sat on the couch. 

I lowered my head obediently, ready to accept 

judgment. 

The atmosphere was cold enough to freeze. 

“Talk,” Nolan said, crossing his arms. “How long has this been going on?” 

I gathered my courage and tried to speak first. 

“Nolan, we…” 

“I didn’t ask you.” 

Nolan’s face was cold. 

“I pursued her first.” 

Adrian held my hand to calm me and explained everything from beginning to end in an even voice. 

Halfway through, Nolan started rubbing his temples. 

Then came repeated deep breaths. 

Finally, Nolan pointed at me. 

“You. Go to your room.” 

“But…” 

“Go. To. Your. Room.” 

Helpless, I looked at Adrian. 

Adrian gave me a slight nod. 

I slowly retreated. 

Then I pressed my ear against it, trying to hear what 

was happening outside. 

I could not hear anything. 

Damn it. 

The door was too soundproof. 

Who knew how long passed before the sky outside had 

turned completely dark. 

There was a knock at my door. 

I opened it. Adrian stood outside. 

“It’s handled.” 

I tensed. “Are you alive?” 

“Nolan agreed.” 

Adrian lowered his head until his forehead touched 

mine, his nose brushing gently against mine. 

“He needs some time to process, so he’s heading back 

to Ashford.” 

My eyes widened. “That went so smoothly? How did you convince him?” 

Adrian’s lips curved. 

“Secret.” 

“Adrian…” 

He suddenly lowered his head and pressed his mouth 

to mine. 

It was the kind of kiss that made the rest of the world 

disappear. 

“Now, back to where we were before your brother interrupted…” 

Adrian’s fingers settled at my waist, his gaze dark. 

“You have to tell me first… mm…” 

He did not give me the chance to finish. 

Afterward, Adrian went downstairs to make some 

comfort food. 

I lay on the bed, hugged the blanket, and rolled over, still feeling as if none of this was real. 

My phone buzzed. 

It was a message from Nolan. 

I shot upright and tapped it open. It was a long 

paragraph. 

Nolan:[Star, Adrian and I have competed against each other for years, and I’ve taken plenty of losses to him 

in business too.] 

Nolan: [But because of that, I know better than anyone 

how exceptional he is.] 

Nolan: [So I wasn’t against you two because he’s my 

rival. I was against it because I know his family is a 

mess. His family is toxic, and he grew up in a desert of 

affection. I didn’t want you to be the one who had to 

teach him how to be human.] 

Nolan:[That guy made me a lot of promises. I honestly didn’t expect him to put up seven million dollars as proof of sincerity, so I’ll give him one chance for now.] 

Nolan: [And I’m willing to respect your choice.] 

Nolan: [Love boldly. I’ll always be behind you. If Adrian ever treats you badly, I won’t let him get away with it.] 

There was a photo attached underneath. 

I tapped it open and zoomed in. 

It was an agreement, stamped with Adrian’s notarized 

signature. 

The general meaning was that if we broke up, 

regardless of the reason, Adrian would voluntarily give me seven million dollars and three estate properties as 

compensation. 

Nolan: [He didn’t want me to tell you. But I figured you should know exactly how much he’s betting on you.] 

I stared at the message for a long time. 

The tears started before I could stop them. 

“Food’s ready.” 

Adrian’s voice came from downstairs. 

I snapped back to myself. 

“I made your favorite milkshake too.” 

I quickly wiped the corner of my eye, turned off my phone screen, and ran downstairs in my slippers.
