The Soldier I Married Is the Don’s Heir Chapter 04

Back at the Bushwick apartment, the smell of soup hit me the second I walked in.

Under the dim yellow light, Rocco heard the door open, and the joy in his eyes was impossible to hide.

“You’re back? Come try the stew I made.”

His apron still had stains from handling the ingredients.

I took the bowl he handed me and sipped.

“It’s really good. Your cooking’s getting better and better.”

His face flushed slightly. He scratched the back of his head, awkward.

“Something weird happened today. A bunch of guys in black suits showed up, saying I’m some family’s long-lost heir and I need to come back and take over the business.”

“Sounds like a scam. I beat the one in charge, and they didn’t even fight back.”

My hand paused mid-air.

The comments appeared immediately.

[Here comes the key plot. Rocco’s going back to the Vadala family, and Estate’s definitely gonna grab his leg and beg him not to go.]

[She’d rather destroy Rocco’s life than let go.]

[Estate, get lost.]

Rocco and I had been living together for half a year.

His foster parents treated him like garbage. He never went to college. He dropped out early and worked construction.

The first time he brought me back to his place, he was still cursing under his breath.

“Really? They wouldn’t even give you enough food?”

Half in disbelief, he split his own stew in half and pushed it toward me.

“Eat up. I don’t even like meat anyway. Just get full so you stop clinging to me.”

He always talked tough but had a soft soul.

He said I was a huge pain in the ass, but as long as I followed quietly behind him, he couldn’t do a thing about it.

When he found out I used to be a student at NYU, he helped me get a tutoring job.

After I got my first paycheck, I took Rocco to a buffet in Queens.

I hadn’t really eaten meat in so long. After a few plates, the way he looked at me started to change.

I was rubbing my overstuffed belly, which hurt a little, when he suddenly said, “Estate, what you’re missing isn’t food. Food is just food. It can’t replace what you actually need.”

What I actually needed?

My hand stopped.

Deep down, I knew. What I really needed was love.

At that thought, I smiled bitterly.

Rocco panicked immediately.

“Don’t cry. I’m not joining any mafia family. I’ll make it on my own, and I can still give you a better life.”

The comments were still cursing.

[What else can Estate do besides cry?]

[The heir has plenty of pretty girls around him. Once he sees real high society, who’s gonna look at this rude fat girl?]

But I turned and grabbed Rocco’s hand.

“You have to go back to your family. They’re not scammers. You are the Vadala family heir. Don’t give up what belongs to you.”

That applied to me too.

I couldn’t let Rocco miss out on the life that was supposed to be his.

He froze for a moment, rubbing his palm over and over.

“I don’t really want to claim them. But if you want me to go, I’ll go meet them.”

I knew he wanted a real family more than anyone.

He agreed to meet the Vadala family.

Three days later, the Vadala family invited every family in New York to a dinner. Word was Rocco would be seated right next to Don Vadala.

At the same time, a black Rolls-Royce pulled up outside the old Bushwick apartment building.

The Vadala family’s butler blocked the door.

“Miss Conti, Don Vadala requests your presence.”
