The Soldier I Married Is the Don’s Heir Chapter 03

The moment I walked in, my mother smocked me across the face.

“Are you that desperate for food? Is food all you ever think about? The whole circle’s saying you’re some soldier’s kept woman. You’ve dragged the Conti name through the mud!”

I glared at her, my eyes red.

My father let out a heavy sigh.

“Esta, no matter how far our family has fallen, we don’t sell our daughters for meals. What are the other families supposed to think of us?”

Looking at those two hypocritical parents, I only felt ridiculous.

I’d been raised by my grandparents. I was the smallest daughter, who was always ignored in the family.

Luca was attractive and smart. Aurora was striking and graceful. Everywhere they went, they were the center of attention. Everyone in the family had their own place, and I was the one usually left behind in the mansion.

The nanny who took care of me when I was little had a kind soul. She often baked bread with me.

She once told me, “When your soul feels bitter, eat something sweet. It makes the days easier.”

I loved sweets, and in one lonely stretch after another, I ate myself rounder and rounder.

At every party, there was always someone whispering behind a champagne glass.

“Is that the girl from the Conti family? So weird. Her brother and sister are both so slim. How did she end up looking like that?”

“Only vulgar nouveaux riches stuff their face without restraint. She doesn’t look like a lady raised by a decent family at all.”

I held back tears and tried dieting, but I was never satisfied.

Because it was never just my stomach that was starving. It was my soul.

I lifted my head and wiped the tears from my face.

“If I embarrass you, then I’m not your sister.”

Aurora grabbed my hand tightly, her eyes red.

“Dear, there’s really no need to make such a scene over a few meal vouchers.”

As she spoke, she shoved a few meal vouchers into my arms.

“Didn’t you want roast duck? I’ve been saving these. You can have them now.”

Aurora was always like that.

She’d stir everyone up, then step forward as the only kind person.

“Every week, every meal, I drew the cheapest vegetarian option. Was that really just bad luck?”

I turned to look at Luca.

He guiltily touched his nose, but still said stubbornly, “It was just bad luck. Drop it. One meal really isn’t worth acting like this.”

I opened the recording on my phone and set it on the coffee table.

Luca and Aurora’s voices echoed clearly through the room.

“You really did drive our little sister away. Who could stand eating vegetarian every day?”

“She needs to be taught a lesson. Who told her to ignore the family’s image? Want to wager she’ll come crawling back for those meal vouchers tomorrow?”

“I believe it. She can’t miss a single meal. It’s like she’s never seen food in her life.”

“You’re terrible.”

When the laughter died down, Aurora and Luca’s faces went pale at the same time.

My parents froze in place.

I didn’t bother with them anymore. I turned, went back to my room, and packed what little I had left.

I had just reached the door when Aurora rushed over to apologize.

“I’m sorry, Esta. We really were only doing it for your own good.”

“If you’re going to blame anyone, blame me. Don’t blame Luca. It was all my idea.”

My mother hurried to explain.

“Esta, your brother and sister were only worried about your health…”

I grabbed the doorknob.

“If you couldn’t even spare the funds to feed me, then pretend you never had a daughter.”

My mother screamed after me, her eyes red.

“Estate, if you dare walk out that door today, you’re not my daughter anymore!”

“Not your daughter?”

“That was exactly what I wanted.”

“I’d already lost my home anyway.”
