I Called For Help, He Called It Jealousy Chapter 08

The deeper the investigation went, the more came to light. The medical records Lily had always cited as

proof of her severe asthma were forgeries she’d bought through a black-market broker.

She didn’t have asthma at all. She’d never even gone to the emergency room for it.

Alongside the murder charge, she now faced additional charges over the forged medical documents and her

interference with the rescue. Online, people dug up every ugly thing she’d ever posted, along with a long

history of manipulative behavior.

She became the most hated woman on the internet.

At the detention center, Ethan used the last of his connections to secure ten minutes alone with her in an

interview room. Dressed in thin street clothes, he looked painfully gaunt, with disheveled hair and sunken

eyes.

Lily, wearing a jail uniform, still tried to summon a few tears when she saw him.

“Ethan, please get me out of here. The police question me every day. I’m scared.”

She even reached across the table for his hand. “I’ll do anything if you help me. Claire’s already dead. I’ll take good care of you from now on. We can start over, can’t we?”

Listening from above, I almost wanted to applaud the sheer audacity of it. It took a truly special kind of mind

to come up with that.

Ethan looked at her without a trace of his old tenderness. All that remained was disgust.

He took out his phone, started recording, and set it on the table.

“Lily Harper, after everything that’s happened, do you still think I care about you?”

He watched her coldly. “I knew, at least some of the time, that you were playing up your illnesses. But I’d tell myself we’d grown up together. You were a girl who needed someone looking out for her. I should cut you

some slack.”

“I never imagined you could be this cruel.”

Her expression changed. She dropped the helpless little act.

“Stop pretending you’re so innocent! If you loved her that much, why didn’t you save her first? You had feelings for me. You’re just too much of a coward to admit it!”

Ethan drew a deep breath and closed his eyes. “Yes. I was wrong. I forgot what my responsibilities were. I

made a habit of indulging you out of pity.”

“And I was wrong to assume that because Claire was strong, I could keep taking her for granted.”

He opened his eyes and fixed them on Lily. “I came here to tell you I’ve given the prosecutors evidence of

every act of extortion and deliberate assault you’ve committed over the past few years.”

“Including the time you hired someone to tamper with another person’s brakes so you could get ahead.”

Her eyes widened. “Are you insane? You already helped me make all of that go away!”

Ethan stood and picked up his phone. “I covered for you. That’s my crime. So if it means going to prison with

you, that’s what I’ll do.”

He turned toward the door without giving her another look. “I’ll be waiting, Lily. I’ll spend the rest of my life

watching you wish you were dead.”

Behind him, she began to scream. She pounded on the table, shrieking and losing all control.

Watching them, I felt nothing but satisfaction. I could have watched those two tear each other apart all day.
