He Made Me Schedule Meetings, Then Failed to Book Me Chapter 04

“Ethan! How dare you freeze my card?”

He was with Chloe, of course.

“Weren’t you the one threatening to divorce me? I was just giving you a preview of life after divorce.”

“If you’ve changed your mind, remember to book time in advance to withdraw the papers. Next Friday, as

usual.”

When I realized he was about to hang up, I cried out:

“Mom’s having a heart attack! Please restore my card right now!”

“I’ll apologize to Chloe right now. I’ll do anything…”

Chloe’s voice came through the phone.

“Claire, don’t tempt fate by saying things like that.”

“You’re using your mother’s illness as an excuse to shop. Aren’t you afraid you’ll make it come true?”

“I’ll use my account to book Ethan for you so he can withdraw the papers. Just don’t say things like that

again.”

Mason grabbed the phone from her. “You horrible woman! I knew you’d interrupt our vacation!”

He hung up.

I collapsed to my knees, barely able to breathe.

Ethan frowned as he stared at the call he’d just ended.

Five minutes later, he got up anyway and bought the next available flight.

“Keep playing with Mason. I still don’t feel right. I want to go back and check on things.”

He headed to the airport before Chloe could stop him.

After landing, he turned off airplane mode and found no missed calls from me.

There were no voicemail messages either.

There was only one message from the property manager.

Ethan tapped it without thinking. By the time he finished listening, all the color had drained from his face.

“Mr. Carter, the woman who caused a scene here last time brought her mother today.”

“The older woman had a heart attack during the argument. This isn’t going to be our fault, is it?”

Ethan called back immediately. “Which hospital are they at?”

The property manager sounded confused. “I don’t know… Claire called the ambulance herself.”

Ethan found the nearest hospital on his map and rushed there.

He kept calling my phone, but I never answered.

He went to the billing desk and asked, “Was a woman’s card frozen here just now?”

The clerk looked up. “Who are you?”

For the first time, Ethan sounded unsure. “I’m her husband…”

The clerk went back to typing. “There was a woman whose card was declined.”

Ethan leaned over the counter. “Did she pay afterward? What room was she taken to?”

The clerk stopped typing. “No. We don’t know.”

“If that’s all, step aside. You’re holding up the line.”

Ethan braced both hands on the counter before he had enough strength to move away.

He kept wondering what my reaction had been when he ended the call.

Without any word from me, he felt like a man running blindly in circles.

After a moment, Ethan took out his phone and called Chloe.

“Bring Mason home now. Get the fastest flight you can.”

It was noisy on Chloe’s end. She was still playing with Mason.

She gave a light laugh. “Did you find Claire?”

“Is she trying to withdraw the divorce, or is she going after custody of Mason?”

The moment Mason heard her, he shouted:

“I’m not going with that horrible woman! I want to stay with Aunt Chloe!”

“Mason!”

Ethan’s voice went cold.
