Reborn: Revenge On My Wife & Her Fake Confidant Chapter 07 The Ending I Changed

A boot came down on the flash drive and-crushed it.

Mason bent down, picked up the shattered pieces, and laughed like he had already won.

“Adrian, what are you going to fight me with now? Your only bargaining chip is gone. You’re finished.”

Police sirens suddenly wailed outside the factory.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What is that?”

Mason panicked too.

“I thought you said everything had been taken care of!”

I gave them a cold smile.

“Vanessa, did you honestly think I’d walk into a place like this with no backup plan? I called the police before I came. You can explain the rest to them.”

Officers stormed into the factory.

Within moments, Vanessa, Mason, and every one of the hired thugs had been restrained.

I rushed to my father and helped him to his feet.

“Dad, are you okay?”

He managed a weak smile.

“I’m fine, Adrian. You did the right thing.”

I watched Vanessa being forced into a police car.

My feelings were tangled in a way I could not name.

I got my father to the hospital first.

Then I went straight to the police with the evidence proving Mason had taken kickbacks and embezzled public project funds.

The river-crossing bridge project was halted completely.

When the mayor came to inspect the site, his expression was grim.

It had been one of the city’s most important projects in years.

One man’s greed had nearly destroyed it.

The corner-cutting had started all the way back at the foundation.

A bridge that should have opened early the following year now had to be rebuilt from the ground up.

That meant another enormous investment of money and manpower.

In front of the mayor, I gave my word.

“Three years. I’ll have it finished within three years.”

The job ahead was brutal.

I had no time left to spend thinking about Vanessa.

I did not see her again until the trial, when I appeared in court as both a victim and a witness.

Only a few months had passed.

Vanessa looked as though she had aged more than ten years.

Fine lines crowded the corners of her eyes, and her complexion had turned a sickly yellow.

Every charge was backed by conclusive evidence.

Neither Vanessa nor Mason had any room left to deny what they had done.

In the end, the judge delivered the sentences in open court.

Vanessa received seven years in prison for intentional assault and for covering up another person’s crimes.

Mason received ten years for intentional assault and embezzlement of a large amount of public funds.

He was also fined $4 million.

The instant the gavel came down, Mason lost control of his bladder.

He collapsed into the spreading yellow stain beneath him and sobbed like a child.

As Vanessa was taken away, she turned back and looked at me.

I gave her no chance to speak.

Afterward, Vanessa submitted request after request asking to see me.

I turned every single one down.

I was busy.

The construction schedule had been compressed, and the workload was crushing.

I practically lived at the project site.

Every morning, I opened my eyes and started working.

Even asleep. I talked about the bridge.

I spent three full years living at that pace,

On the final day of the deadline, the project was complete.

The mayor came in person to cut the ribbon and officially open the bridge.

Only then did I finally let myself smile.

The tragedy from my first life had not happened again.

The finished bridge carried thousands upon thousands of vehicles safely across the river, just as it had always been meant to.

My father’s treatment was working too.

His condition was finally improving.

And there was one more thing.

Something just as important.

I had found real love.

In the end, Riley and I chose each other.

If nothing unexpected happened, we would be getting married by the end of the year.
