My Husband Tried to Give His Fortune to His Secret Son, But He Forgot Our Prenup Chapter 01

My husband married into my family, kept a secret relationship for thirty years, and still thought he could walk away with everything.

Even his son from that long-hidden bond had come back from an Ivy League school overseas and landed a senior position at the company.

Everyone was waiting for me to fall apart.

Instead, I ate well, went shopping, played cards with friends, and posted pictures of afternoon tea on social media every day, looking as though I had nothing in the world to worry about.

Behind my back, they called me a fool.

Then Skyler Hayes received news of a serious illness.

When his condition turned grave, he decided to leave the family business and all his liquid holdings to his son from that other relationship.

The hospital room fell completely silent.

Everyone expected me to lose my mind. Many waited to watch me break down, ready to capture my reaction.

But I only smiled.

“Skyler, did you forget? You signed a prenup before we got married. Your annual compensation was set at 1 per year. Where exactly did you get all those assets?”

The color drained from his face.

…

At the shareholders’ meeting, Skyler suddenly collapsed.

He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors told him his condition was grave and time was limited.

That morning, he summoned his private attorney, the company’s shareholders, and his family to the hospital.

I sat on the couch, calmly peeling an apple.

Skyler was propped halfway up in bed, with dark circles under his eyes, his face deathly pale.

The attorney was adjusting the camera, saying that to ensure the will was legally valid, the entire process needed to be recorded.

Soon, the recording began.

Skyler clenched his fist against his lips and gave a quiet cough before saying, “I owe all of you a great deal. I wouldn’t have gotten this far without your support.”

“I’ve been diagnosed with a serious illness, and my days are numbered. Today, in the presence of everyone here, I’ve decided to make my will.”

As he said that, Skyler instinctively glanced at me, then quickly looked away.

He looked exactly like he did every time he came home after spending the night somewhere else, guilt written all over his face.

Based on thirty years of experience, I knew exactly what came next—he was about to do something that would hurt me.

Sure enough, he dropped a bombshell.

“I, Skyler Hayes, hereby declare that the successor to the Carter Group will be Lucas Hayes.”

The room erupted.

The twenty-seven-year-old Lucas Hayes was Skyler’s son with Madeline Shaw.

He’d attended elite private schools growing up, then gone on to an Ivy League university, where he completed his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

After returning home, he’d risen to senior management at the company in just two years. Quite a few shareholders thought highly of him. And when they heard the announcement, several of them glanced at me with barely concealed amusement.

Skyler’s mother crossed her arms, looking satisfied, while his sister hid a quiet laugh.

I simply kept peeling the apple, my expression unchanged.

Skyler hadn’t finished and quickly continued for the camera. “All the liquid holdings in my name, including luxury properties I purchased overseas, will go to Lucas.”

“The two downtown properties will go to my mother and my sister.”

“As for Vivian Carter, she’s never had anything to do with the company’s affairs, so she has no right to take any of my assets. But I’m leaving her the Carter family estate. After thirty years of marriage, I figure that’s more than enough.”

He said it all in one breath without the slightest hesitation. It was as though he’d rehearsed those words in his head countless times, which was why they came so effortlessly now.
